When / Should I interview outside?

Yoe : 4 in the summer Tc 2021: 380K 2022 : 380 ? again due to drop but perf refresh I am E5 with very good ratings (GE/GE) and manager says I should be able to get to E6 in summer as well just one growth area we have been addressing and I’m progressing If I get to 6 obviously my pay will lag behind but I want to transition to EM and I think this gives me the best shot at that. If I am going to interview outside I feel like E6/ staff would be realllly hard to get + path to becoming an EM will severely be hindered. I wouldn’t say no to being paid more outside but that’s hella time to commit to study & I just moved to a new city and enjoying the WLB I have now. If it’s a good longer term growth & tc I’d do it tho Could my extremely smart friends on this app help me think through this decision or help me build a framework to evaluate?

i don’t have the experience to advise you, but my intuition says to stay where you are. you’re obviously in a position to succeed, and it does not seem to be plateauing any time soon. what’s your background? MS/phd? ivy league school?

Ivy League school but was not very good many kids smarter than me and all did great internships, started working June 2018 I started off with bad ratings @ fb tho When I think about path to succeed I kinda agree I can operate well in this system So that’s why I have wanted to stay

Going to L6 with 4yoe seems very fast, even for PhD. Are you sure your manager is on your side and not just shutting you up?

Meta hufc53 OP Feb 26, 2022

I had skip manager also say the same thing, I genuinely don’t think he is blowing smoke up me He also actively wants to work on promo packet

As a manager it's much easier to say "let's work at your package" than to confront the report and tell them honestly that they're not ready.

Even if you switch, with that yoe there are very few companies that will pay that much. Facebook offers great growth opportunities and yes you’ll be an underpaid e6, but for your yoe that’s gonna be above everything else. Snap, uber, lyft, airbnb, hfts are the only places that I can think of. Lets say you do switch laterally to like Uber L5a and start making 450k, you wont hit 5b for atleast 2 years, catching up on the domain and building expertise take time for staff level, which you already have at facebook. Other places don’t offer such high velocity even with amazing performance as far as I know compared to FB so it wins in that regard I would say stay, enjoy your wlb and well above average TC. Hard choice and I’m in a similar situation too (not at microsoft just switched). My plan is to pick the place that has the greatest returns for a longer time period and that I can see myself staying for 4-5yrs. Then see what my options look like when I hit around the 8yoe mark My TC 415k 3.5yoe

I feel like your career trajectory is great for your YOE, and if you want to be EM long-term it probably makes sense to cut your teeth at Meta before looking for external opportunities. Given your YOE, you might even find it difficult to get L5 interview loops outside of Meta
