Throughout my 7 year journey of Development and Software Engineering I've always held the belief that hardworj would be enough to set you above the rest. And that's pretty much held true for the 2 companies I've been at. However I wonder, what sets an engineer above the rest when everyone on the team works hard? What are some things you guys have witnessed that made you think "That person is built different" that wasn't just work ethic? I want to know what makes an engineer special aside from just hard work. Some background: I started in tech support for Stamps after losing my job as a night stocker and following a lead on craigslist. The job was 2.5hrs by train on the way in, 3.5hrs on the way back, but I was addicted to gaming and told myself I couldnt game on a train and would use that time to study. A year after riding the train 6hrs a day spamming Udemy (as well as in between phone calls and on my breaks) they created an associate front end web dev position for me. I want to learn everything and I love full stack, so I would volunteer to take tickets we would send to the backend team or db team. After 5 years and a promotion to mid level front end, I was promoted to a brand new full stack position officially. Unfortunately shortly after that we were bought by a VC and rolled into one of the companies we bought ironically enough and I was laid off. 4 months of study, 2 failed interviews (one passed because no schooling and the other passed because no enterprise ruby experience), and a lucky recruiter pull later I got hired as an SE2 for a Loan platform under a big bank. Things are looking up but I want to grow more. TC: 125k Yoe: 7 #engineering #software #swe

Hard work will get you everywhere. At the very top, it’s a lot of luck tbh. But you need hard work to get those opportunities.

Good marketing. It’s mostly perception if they think you are good. Show up the rest and you got it made.
