My company is growing rapidly through acquisitions, and until recently, I felt like that would help lead to more opportunities for my career. This has been the very best team I have ever been part of until they brought in a new CMO this past August. She doesn’t listen to any of us that have been in the trenches through so many acquisitions and growth. She regurgitates whatever sales tells her. She cares about vanity metrics (she’s super hung up on bounce rate if that helps paint the picture). My very awesome director quit because of her. She fired my (much loved) VP and replaced him with another VP. And when I pitched myself as my director’s replacement (because I have acted as interim director while she was on leave), the CMO gave me a quick no, that it wasn’t the right job for me. Is my opportunity gone because this woman is unwilling to consider the current talent that existed prior to her joining? Should I start looking for new opportunities elsewhere? I’m great at my job, get along with my awesome colleagues (who are also miserable right now), and besides the CMO, I’m pretty good with the leadership and the direction of the company.
Either she leaves or you leave
VWYF. go
Stay for another year to see how things go. There’s a slim chance that she might get fired if she’s incapable and causing high turnover / high volume of negative feedback from your team.
If everyone follows this advice she wouldn't be causing high turnover. Leave, highlight your reason for leaving in the exit interview and come back a year later.
Do you have other c-suiye leader's ear? May be worth seeking their advice?
Aww Jen-nay! Good gif choice.
Given the short shelf life of CMO’s, she could be out in two years. But that’s a long time to stagnate. Go look for opportunities elsewhere and make it clear in your exit interviews what drove you to leave. Hopefully that makes her life miserable for her tenure for driving away all of the tenured marketing employees.
GTFO. Have a similar issue as far as totally misguided and inept leadership approaching every marketing metric as an MQL (and even sales says these aren’t helping). Anyone who disagrees is demoted or punished. There is massive attrition and unhappiness. Am job searching because I can’t succeed in this environment and not going to wait for change.
The effing ego of these leaders is insane. My CMO wants to brand an RV to drive it around the country to give demos. Our customers work in hospitals. Hospitals that are short staffed and filled to the brim. There’s not a freaking thing in it for our customers but sure, let’s spend an insane amount to stroke the ego of this woman.
Job market is excellent right now. Go find somewhere that’s doing great work where your contributions are valued. That’s what I’m doing.
Can confirm - job market is crazy. Got 4 offers, would’ve been five but I pulled out of an interview with lots of recruiter calls still set up in case all opportunities fell thru. Go get something you like with leaders you admire.
Look elsewhere immediately. You will stagnate following a poor leader and be miserable.
