Many recruiters ask for minimum base salary. I like to negotiate TC since the non-base portion of salary can vary widely between companies. Regardless, I try to be very clear on what my “I will sign the offer letter today” criteria is. What’s your approach?
NEVER EVER VOLUNTEER your comp. Tell them you will await their first move offer if and when it gets to that stage.
I don’t tell them my comp
No u should tell them the comp expectations that would make u accept. Just don’t reveal ur current comp.
I think you are missing two options in the poll answers: neither and both.
Ok so what would you pick if it were an option
Both. You should be aiming for a high total comp with a certain minimum base. Communicate both as you start negotiations. For example, you probably wouldn’t want $30k base with a good TC.

Can you explain a bit more about how you would negotiate based on TC?
Sure. I’ll say something like “if base + equity + bonus for the first 12 months is X, I would sign an offer letter” But if you were to merely give your expectations on base alone, the offer might fall short of your expectations for total compensation if they are light on RSUs, for example.
I should also clarify I’m speaking more towards earlier discussion (like 1st phone call with recruiter) just to ensure that we don’t have wildly different expectations on what an offer would look like.
