When should I give resignation notice?

I have accepted an offer which is going to start 4th Feb. I have an upcoming trip from 11 Jan - 31st Jan. I am thinking to use my current PTO for the trip. When should I give resignation notice? Which day should I keep as the last day at current company? I was thinking to give resignation on Jan 2 (the day on which offices open after the shutdown) , serve the notice period from 2nd Jan-10th Jan and then go for the trip and on 1st Feb submit laptop.

If u give notice to be done on the 10th, you will be submitting your laptop/badge on that day... see if your manager will let you do what you want, but your end date should be on the day u actually plan on leaving...

The right thing to do is to resign, to take an unpaid vacation, and then start a new job. But of course, no one does that - so give notice after you come back from vacation.

I will not have time to serve notice period after coming back from vacation. I have to start new job from 4th Feb. and I am coming back on 31st Jan

Why is that the right thing? OP is using his entitled PTO

Give notice after you come back. Ask new company to move starting date a week or so

Any spec reasons to give notice after coming back?

Nothing as such this is just to avoid ur company terminating you before ur Vacation time

Resign before you go. The company pays out remaining PTO, so you don't lose out. Don't forget a month of cobra

What should I keep my last date? Jan 10 or February 1st

Facebook newy Jan 1, 2019

I'd do Jan 10 if it's not a work related trip

Joining on receipt?

I am on STEM-OPT so doesn’t need visa transfer

This is rude and funny at the same time. Manager won’t lose anything by firing you on the same day. I don’t know your visa status but if it’s not green card... you might stay unemployed while you go on the trip. You can’t take a PTO after you have told company that you will be leaving. That’s like telling them pay me for free.

Cisco RbYm72 Jan 1, 2019

But he still earned his PTO. Either he takes it or cashes it out.

I am just trying to be nice by deciding to serve the notice period or else I can leave on Feb 1st as well without giving them a notice

Cisco jgudvruv Jan 1, 2019

Give notice tomorrow and ask your manager what works best for them within your constraints

Employmet is at will. Do what's best fo your interests. That's what they would do. Don't be nice

I’m in the same situation except i’m trying to use vacation time that’s given to all employees on 1/1 (not PTO I earned). Planning to give notice tomorrow, work until 1/11 and use vacation days for a week and return stuffs the day after return. Would it be a dick move? My company won’t pay for unused vacation

Google snidely Jan 1, 2019

In most states they're required by law to pay you for unused vacation days

Give notice once you come back. And push your joining date by one week.
