When to give 2 week notice

Hi, I will be joining apple in september. I trying to see if I should let my manager know on Aug 19 which makes the end date Aug 30 and then I will not be having health insurance till Sep 3. 2nd option will be to push start date to Sep 9 and put notice on Aug 26 which lets me have insurance without lapse

Don’t they have to cover 1 month insurance from last day. Regardless you can still have cobra if a couple days lapse in insurance is a big deal.

Do you have a link handy? Never knew of such a thing.

BYTON cJKu57 Aug 11, 2019

For cobra?

Insurances usually are month to month deals. So, let's say you join new company on 3rd, it will cover you from 1st of the month. Similarly, irrespective of what day of month your last day would be i n August, you'll be covered till end of the month.

I know but in this case month changes and I am no longer employee it Amazon starting sep 1 and not an employee of apple till sep 3

Insurance should be the last thing on your mind. People switch jobs all the time and everyone is covered most of the times.

Yes but just being over protective.

What’s the concern? Taxes? Unless you plan doing something reckless you’ve never done before between 8/31 and 9/3, then you have nothing to be worried about. You won’t be penalized come tax time unless you’ve been uninsured for more than three months.

I know but just being overprotective. Also planning to drive to Cali so wanting to have an insurance.

Sounds like a fit for travel insurance. Berkshire Hathaway has the best plans IMHO. Because you are changing jobs, you are also eligible to purchase a plan from Healthcare.gov, which will almost certainly be cheaper than COBRA. That said, COBRA is an option. You'll have some time to purchase it without lapse if you need to file a claim.

If anything goes wrong during those 2 days, you can opt for cobra otherwise you can ignore it.

BYTON cJKu57 Aug 11, 2019

Right. Good idea. Cobra can be back dated upto 90 days.

Amazon calvindad OP Aug 12, 2019

Thats awesome. Will take this path. Thank you!

You can always use Cobra if you ever have a need.

There is no legal requirement to give 2 weeks notice. It’s an at-will employment, which means either employee or company can quit without any notice. You should also prepare to be walked out on the same or next day— I have seen it and done it — it’s not common but possible depending on where you are going and how your manager judges the risk of you staying in team after notice. Don’t worry about insurance, think about managing relationships (if that matters to you).

Amazon calvindad OP Aug 12, 2019

The thing is I like my team and dont want to burn bridges. Thats one of the reason to give a proper notice. My relationship with manager is good and i am hoping not to be walked out same day but thats not in my hands.
