When I opened my account, I selected the default Vanguard retirement fund and after 2.5 years, I only have 5k profit on 100k contribution. Just curious where everyone is investing in their 401k account. Google offers a self directed brokerage account for 401k in Charles Schwab, which allows us to invest in anything including options.
What is the target date for the fund? What is your target retirement timeline? If these are within the next 5 years, it is not a surprise they invested in lower risk investments perhaps. Be careful assessing performance over the last couple of years, the large cap tech stocks have been pushing the nasdaq/ s&p500 higher but the other components haven't performed as well. If the fund has invested in other asset classes such as small cap growth and emerging markets, the returns haven't been as good. You should understand what you are investing in and how the benchmarks for that fund are doing.
Usually the S&P500 fund, TargetDate fund and some growth fund. I’m in my mid 30s.
FXAIX (S&P fund) You can do target retirement funds that are less volatile if you don’t like the volatility.
