Where to buy a Golden Retriever puppy?

My SO loves golden retrievers, so I am looking to buy one for her. Any idea where I can find a trusted breeder? Preferably in Northern California? The last thing I want is to figure in two years that we have got one with serious health problems. TC: 140 YOE: 2

Please foster a dog before getting a puppy. There are tons of people who just get a big dog when they are small puppies but give them up to a shelter once puppy starts getting bigger

Good suggestion! Though I am new to this world and not sure how I can foster one.

Please adopt! Don’t shop Go to any near by shelter and they can help you with fostering procedure/ adoption

Considering the number of dogs in shelters (Goldens too), I’ve never understood why people go to the expense of supporting breeding farms.

I tried a few shelters, but they had none! If you know a shelter with golden retriever please leave the link here. Thanks in advance!

Because a golden retriever is the most desirable breed in the country. Shelters aren’t going to have those. That’s why breeders exist

Find a good breeder regardless of where they are in the US. My neighbors in WA found the breeder that was recommended in TX and got the puppy from there.

That's what I am trying to do!

Don’t buy a dog for gods sake 🤦🏼‍♂️

The last sentence is confusing. No references but. Goldens often have health problems because of how heavily they’re bred. They have genetic conditions and are quite common to have arthritis, hip displasia & heart diseases. Please vet the breeder as much as you can & also get health certifications. We love goldens too but we adopted from rescue and couldn’t have been happier

Bayer L0gan OP Apr 16, 2022

That's my concerns. I read a lot of reviews that people figure out their 2-year puppies have serious health conditions. I just want to avoid a similar situation.

Amazon boomboompw Apr 16, 2022

It’s very difficult to avoid. They are large breeds & have genetic issues. Even the most reputable breeders cannot guarantee. It’s not all in their hands.

I have adopted two dogs. From shelters. That are mix breds. Pure breds can have lots of genetic issues. I prefer mutts and so many dogs need a home. Example: we founded a labradoodle and also a golden mix that are awesome!

Step 1 Don’t ask in public forums asking for a breeder. Never. All the “adopt don’t shop” would be waiting to pounce. It just doesn’t work the same way for everyone. No one walks around preaching people not to buy big brands and buy local for example But people who are looking for good breeders are ALWAYS put to shame Step 2 Talk to people in your neighborhood / dog parks who has your breed of interest and ask for personal recommendations.

Amazon Triber Apr 16, 2022

Don’t buy pure breds.

Bayer L0gan OP Apr 16, 2022

Good advise! Although I get their intention is not bad, but they assumed you don't have gone through the same thought process as theirs. At the end, this is social media!

Do NOT buy a pure bred dog, there isn't enough diversity in the gene pool. Get a mutt that has some retriever or other mix depending on what you like in pets. Also if you aren't able to take them for a walk for 30 minutes morning and evening, stop and reconsider. Two walks is bare minimum with some more weekend activities. So your life will be completely different with a big dog.

I don't think 30 minutes walk will be issue. I should read more on the gene diversity issue.
