Hi i am seriously considering going to MBA at one of the top 5 schools. I am 30 yrs old, tenured L6 PM at Amazon with a Masters in CS. Reasons i am considering- learn, networking, potential good opportunity? Plz lemme know how u think. Thanks
unless you plan on going into consulting in the big3, don't bother. MBA grads enter Amazon at L6 so you'll just be going in a circle
Why say big3 and not MBB?
Hell naw
Do part time
I’m in similar position, if my employer would pay for it I’d do it but 150k is just too much money to be honest
Not only the $150k but the opportunity cost of two years of no income. Assuming school costs $150k and he makes $150k/year the true cost is $450k.
Keep your current job and get an online MBA from a top school like Wharton or Ross and then walk around pretending you graduated from the full time program and ‘forget’ to specify you got it online or part time on your resume. Then when you get called out on it say very defensively “it’s the same thing!” (It’s not).
😂
Sounds like someone who overpaid for a full time MBA, how does it feel forking over 200k+ for a piece of paper?
Most new MBAs will get at best an L6 (at Amazon) PM job. Many will settle for L5 also. So you've already accomplished realistically what the program can give you. I agree with others, if you really want to do this, go to an executive part time program. But the far better idea is that you should wire me $150k because it will be better spent that way.
NO & NO
Going to MBA if you get into a top tier MBA program. Otherwise it is a waste of time and money
Echo with others its probably not worth it for you unless you want to break into another industry/domain. Id rather look into growing within Amazon or interviewing for higher levels outside
L6 PM? Opportunity cost is too high. Unless you’re ok forking over $200k + the compensation you would’ve otherwise earned, it doesn’t make too much sense ROI-wise.
Yep. Gonna cost you at least $1M to do this. Do you believe you’ll be that much stronger after? You can easily be promoted from L6 to L7 internally with that extra year or two of on the job performance. And most MBA hires go into L6 roles anyway.
Instead- get a professional mentor, someone who’s already a L7.5/8 and use them for professional coaching. Costs about $200-250 an hour and say you meet 40 hrs a year for 2 years- that’s like $20k and you will get a lot more value in helping review your writing, think big/other ideas besides professional LP based tips to help you get promoted. And you still continue to keep your income in the interim.
