Using my friend's account as Blind won't let me post with my student account. Offer 1: TikTok NYC. Product Manager for CRM tool for internal users. I will be among the first PMs to build this tool with internal development teams. But will have to relocate from Bay Area later. Offer 2: Autodesk SF. Product Manager for product insights and analytics platform for external customers. Teams are organized in trifectas of product, design and engineering. But will be at the bottom of the reporting chain. This is my first official PM role after grad school. So I am interested to know which one has better long-term PM career potential. Comp is not the biggest priority at this point. 4 PM out of 10 total YOE. #offer #career #tech
What's your current company and role?
I am currently in grad school.
I wouldn’t work for TikTok
Unless you hate privacy or have allegiance to China, stay far away from TikTok.
I think in both cases the work is internal facing PM which is fine and usually a good way for people to get PM experience. Tiktok sounds like the better of the 2 because 1. You can start with internal tools and then move to consumer facing PM role internally if you are interested in consumer pm I'm the longer term. 2. Tiktok is a great brand and hot right now. Probably the most happening consumer app at the moment. Of course Autodesk is also a solid company and you cannot really go wrong either way. But if you care about consumer products tiktok is a great opportunity
Why do you think the Autodesk role is internal facing? I was told that there will external customer responsibilities like conducting surveys, customer focus groups, etc.
Sorry my bad. I missed the 'external' in your original post. It certainly looks like a very interesting role. I think it then boils down to whether you want to do consumer PM and whether tiktok might provide you that opportunity in the longer term. Also the brand is amazing.
TC rule is meant for other people to get a useful data point! I hope that makes sense so do post your numbers. It might help a lot of people now or in future!
What are you most passionate about — A social media app or a 3D tool company?
That doesn't really apply at the moment - the product I will be responsible for is not core at either company (one is internal business application vs the other one is spend analytics). I am not sure how easy it is to transfer to the core product teams at either company down the road.
I’m Chinese. For social good, don’t work for Tik Tok. You’re fortunate to have a choice. Make the less evil one.
Interesting insight! Can you elaborate more what is evil about it? This is OP btw
Hi OP! There’s whole lot of debates on data security issues and stuff but I’m a designer and I’m more focused on the user experience side of things. Tiktok (and Douyin, it’s Chinese version) mostly focuses on making young people addict to it, forming fake social image, create anxiety, such and such. Bytedance is indeed a successful company and Tiktok is a successful product, but you got to decide what you want to leave in this world as a person.
Any RSUs from Autodesk?
Yes. But it's liquid money since it's public so I value it like cash.
Racism? That's cool.
The Chinese Communist Party is always cool to make fun of. Grow up.
