Which biotech/pharma company has the best reputation?

My wife works in biotech/pharma and is looking for her next job (remote or in Boston). She hasn’t been in the industry long enough to know which companies are the best to work for. Which companies are the best managed? Which pay at the top of the market? Which are the best managed? We’re curious about these companies and their competitors: Biotech/pharma: Merck J&J Pfizer Sanofi Biogen GSK Bristol Myers Squibb Sarepta Moderna Sage Otsuka Takeda Alynym Vertex Adjacent healthcare companies: Humana CVS/Aetna Phillips Thermo Fisher Boston Scientific Fresenius Perkin Elmer Her current TC is $325k. 3 yoe in biotech, 15 total in healthcare/consulting.

Sage , definitely Sage.

Why Sage?

If I'd have to pick 2 from your list, I'd pick Sage and Vertex. The others, especially big pharma, I'd run the other way. Everything in big pharma is dinosaur-aged, and the scientific caliber is pretty poor. They are more political than anything. The tech-stack is weak, very weak. Sage Bionetworks may be doing more relevant things to what your wife might be seeking. It is a very reputable organization, founded by Eric Schadt and Stephen Friend. I know someone who went onto specialize in Digital Health while working at Sage. All those DREAM challenges powered by Sage are really a pretty big deal. My mentor and manager at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab definitely wanted me to go work for Sage at the next stage in my career.

What about 10x genomics? Heard they have great culture and pay annual rsus

Bristol-Myers Squibb shdwjckr Jun 22, 2021

Regretted attrition from BMS tend to go to Gilead, Vertex, Takeda, Sage, Merck. Heard good things about Valo

Vertex is best out of those names. I personally don’t like big pharma anymore as they are slow, filled with bureaucrats, politics etc…i would also try out new start ups with lots of funding and good management. Why not google health/life science ?

Heard google life science /verily got quite bad WLB🥲🥲

What specialization in biotech is she in? What was her career path?

Roche wubu85 Sep 28, 2021

What is her career path like? Looking for motivation.

Google rxll17 OP Sep 28, 2021

Pre-med BS > Research assistant > Social worker > international aid program manager > MBA > very short stint as a mgmt consultant > hospital admin > hospital digital health people manager > biotech director > pharma senior director. That path took 15 years. Now making ~ $450k with her latest promotion. Busted her ass the whole way.

Roche wubu85 Sep 29, 2021

That is incredible, wish i could connect with her on linkedin. Being an only female in the group of 42 males, I look for motivation out on blind. Thanks for sharing 🙏
