Most of the “Data Scientist” roles today in the market are for product analytics/ business intelligence. Ex: Facebook, LinkedIn, Google. Even when fb, goog have research scientists bar is very high (phd with published papers). Which companies should I target if I have 3.5 year of experience with Amazon as DS and don’t want to be sql monkey reporting to product managers
Amazon as Applied Scientists who does production ML
So do RS and DS in several cases. Just depends on the team. In all cases, you've got to deal with the absolute incompetence in your team members. Lol. The variance in iq in amazon is just astounding.
+100 to that - AS here
Expedia DS is like applied researcher
DS at Uber, Lyft, Doordash, Stitch Fix, Airbnb do real ML/optimization work.
Lyft copied Facebook and called their analysts Data Scientists
I was a DS in amazon for about 3 years (where I wrote production ML code). I do cooler work now as an FB DS. It's a pretty good role and has the scope to do whatever you want. I don't know where this sql monkey shit comes from, but it's simply not true. Unless I just got lucky with my team or something. And obviously the culture is a million times better with much smarter people. Half my team are phds btw. Not talking about the research or core ds role to be clear just the regular one.
Interesting you are in DS analytics? I have interviewed with them . they just ask SQL
Isnt the pay less than the core DS and RS roles tho? The offers I see for FB product analytics are always too low on the rsu component.
If you can, aim for research ds or core ds at FB. Avoid analytics unless that's what you like.
Google DS don't usually report to product managers. What exactly do you want though? You can have the opportunity to work on longer term applied statistics research problems at Google. Search up unofficial google data science blog.
I'm curious about this, is the role called data scientist at Google then? What's the interview process like?
Yes, it used to be called quantitative analyst. The interview is mostly master's level stats focusing on inference, modeling, and experimentation.
If you want to do production ML code, you should interview for ML engineer roles. They also pay better than DS.
Want to do deep learning , reinforcement learning etc etc
ML engineers do that. Probably depends a lot on the project & team.
Get a PhD
No thanks
Then be happy with data scientist aka data analyst
The reality is you as someone with three years of experience and no PhD is likely not going to be the best person to do deep learning at any large company. That’s the reality, there are people way more qualified than you. Maybe you really have the skills but that would make you an outlier and it will be an uphill battle to get those roles. Also, data scientists don’t touch production code at the big companies. So if you really want to do deep learning but don’t have relevant experience doing it, then go to a smaller/unknown company, and/or get the qualifications needed to do it at a large company.
Hmm good point. What small companies will let me do this without compromising a lot on TC
Are any of you guys data scientists? Asking Google. Stop bsing. Data scientists do deep learning at amazon all the time. For fucks sake these swes who come and start commenting about ds roles. Please stfu.

The end of Backdoor Roth?!
It entirely depends on how “data science” is defined. To many, pulling data w SQL, analyzing it, and making recs to decision makers is DS. Do you want to do research? Some of what you’re looking for may be called “Research Scientist/engineer.” Not all of these roles require a doctorate. Develop/deploy production ML models/pipes for products (internal or external)? MLE
I think there’s a difference between data scientist and data analyst
