Current TC is $450k, and I’m full remote in MCOL area (not in a city). Cash is $335k ($270k base), rest is RSUs that vest over 4 years but refreshers are consistent/increasing. Not FAANG, medium size corporation with household name parent company. No advanced degrees. I’m unhappy with some recent leadership changes and started exploring other options, but all roles I’m qualified for seem to only offer low $200s base and lower bonus/stock. The math just doesn’t work out to move, but I feel trapped (I know this is a first world problem). Will I never be able to leave this company unless I somehow make it to VP level (no chance any time soon as we’re not growing)? I’m also concerned that if I get laid off at some point, I’ll have to make big lifestyle changes. I’m confident that I’m really good at my job (work directly with C suite and VPs all the time) but the market just doesn’t seem to be there for non-ML DS.
I think you are in the top 0.1% of your field money wise. Gonna have to hold on to those golden chains hard
This is the reality check I need. Always easy to think the grass could be greener elsewhere. Before this I was always lucky to have management I loved so I never got restless (my previous 2 companies I stayed at for minimum 3-4+ years), but here just at my 2 year anniversary I’m feeling like I need a change.
I mean, I'm not really versed in your domain but it sounds like you're robbing them. Analytics should maybe pay maybe 250k max, at max rank? In SF or similar HCOL area. In MCOL max 150k? Kinda like IRS director or w/e.
Start working on your own company if you still want more money and freedom
yoe?
Started working 2015, had some big jumps and lucky to be in a company that quadrupled in size while I was there
(I’ve been at L5 level for 4 years)
You’re crazy lucky
Why hide your company name? 450k in analytics that too in MCOL is non-existent. You’ll have to die on this hill.
Small enough that I wouldn’t be anonymous
As you said, you’re not going to find anything that pays remotely close to what you make now, even in a HCOL city.
This sounds like 🧢. Op is a troll that can’t share his own company.
You can think what you want 🤷♀️ Promise I’m not a troll, but I do think the variation in how much analytics is valued company to company is insane. In some places it’s a core part of strategic decision making and highly valued, while in other places it’s just people running SQL queries on demand. As I mentioned in a different comment, our pay bands for all types of DS and all locations are the same (and my title is a data science title, not analytics) but in practice we’re an analytics/causal inference team and not a production ML team.

Suck it up, bud. Getting 500 in MCOL is fucking good.
