Already 30 and just start SWE career. Feel a little late. So curious which companies would promote engineers quickly? By promotion, I mean not only to tech role (senior SWE), but also managing role (tech lead or project manager). By company, I’m interested in both tech and finance. But usually finance will be super slow?
You're not late, you were born too early. The next century is going to be amazing. You're missing out.
😂
I just love folks who just want a shortcut to management.
You will never be out of job or not make money (assuming people keep innovating in tech and our goal is skynet). Too many companies out there with FOMO.
I was / am in your shoes. You can get promoted to management super quickly at startups. Google is well known to be the slowest to promote. (Levels.fyi) One other thing to consider is your actual growth, not just the growth of your title. Getting inflated titles might not really benefit you in the long run (or it might). It's possible that you'd be more technically mature, have stronger leadership, and have higher TC as a strong L4 IC at G than as a manager elsewhere. Titles will eventually catch up to your growth but your growth may not catch up to your titles. (I admit, though, it's hard to stomach seeing people much younger than you at a higher level because they started earlier and/or landed in a good spot.)
Don't worry too much about career trajectory. Ageism will kick in by your late 30s and you'll be PIP'd out.
