SDE’s within a team are literally enemies They’ll go to any extent to put random comments on your doc Random comments on code reviews
Initially I never understood why some people took the time and effort to put a lame comment on a doc. But then I realized the manager was lamer and went by shit metrics like comment count/density, number of edits etc. Guess what I did? I also started diarrheating on others docs. Got promoted, promptly left.
To clarify, I didn’t get promoted for criticizing unnecessarily. I honestly hope not. Hopefully it was for all the Sev2s i helped reduce, the oss contributions, and helping the org grow. I learnt a lot. Some willingly, some others not so much. /rant
Nobody joins Amazon for cushy nap pods, massages or wlb. If you survive more than 2 years, you are a veteran and in the minority. Managers are under constant pressure to meet URA numbers, you are always being stack ranked.
Do you folks do direct verbal abuses and physical fights with each other at work at Amazon? Like hit each other etc? Would love to know what extent you people go.
There's a club but we're not supposed to talk about it
Nothing of that sort Everything starts with “ per our last conversation “ or “ as discussed “
Amazon deserves their bad rep.
100%. Facebook also has a culture of less than stellar wlb and the twice annual performance reviews but they don’t have anywhere near the the reputation Amazon does. It’s not the grind or the performance driven culture, it’s the toxic bullshit, incompetent management and pay philosophy designed entirely to benefit the company. They could fix it, but they won’t because big daddy Jeff loves this cancerous culture.
It's a great example of what a terrible company can achieve on fear alone
why do we have such posts? everybody knows who the winner is going to be
I love this poll. Good one OP 😂. It looks like Apple is the ultimate place to work at looking at cutthroat/pay ratio
LOL. For once, Amazon deserves to win a poll.
😂
Amazon is ahead simply because of its scale. Netflix however is the most cutthroat of all. Their culture memo says that openly
Netflix is not cutthroat. We don't stack rank and we have good WLB. You, however, should be able to do your job or you are out, which is only fair.
Amazon has 1 million employed workers, Netflix only has under 10,000. If you scaled Netflix up to the size of Amazon, you would have to stack rank and lose WLB if you wanted to keep the “do your job or you are out” culture FWIW, if you are a terrible SDE at Amazon and completely ignore all your tasks it would take around 3 months to terminate you, Netflix would just fire you in 2 weeks and maybe give you severance
Dumb question hahaha
You don't have to be a rocket scientist to know who will be the top vote.
