Which job to take for data science career?

I was offered a position as a Senior Data Scientist at BNY Mellon at 95k. I have an undergrad in Finance and minor in CS and am trying to become a MAANG data scientist in a few years. I want to get my masters as well, likely online (Berkeley or Illinois). I’m interviewing for a Capital One Sr Business Analyst role that would pay 120k. Is it worth the pay bump to lose the title of data scientist when trying to break in? Also capital one will require more in office time so less study time. There is no point getting a Masters, just get an entry level data scientist role at a startup. Their you would learn more. I have 2 masters, they look good on a wall , but are largely useless

Would it be better to work in a start up or a bigger company if both are entry level DS jobs? Worried about a recession happening and startups dying first

I think that you will learn more in a startup because they are more willing to give you work outside your comfort zone. But might be a good idea to stay out right now at a bigger company

Do you want to do modeling, ML, and causal inference? Cause then you should pursue roles that offer such scope. Do you wanna make big bucks at MANGA companies? An easier path is by developing strong product sense in the tech space and by taking product analytics oriented roles. I’m either case, the title is fairly irrelevant.

Causal inf roles are closer to PA than ML DS. But its very hard to suss out the roles which are just sql monkey over heavy quasi experimental inference. Honestly I feel like everything (statistically) technical nowadays requires a PHD and I made a mistake in stopping with a masters.

I do. My role at BNY is more project management honesrly, I likely won’t be coding all that much, and if I do code it won’t be ML. Not sure about CapOne yet what I could be doing. I’m hoping they have DS opportunities as a business analyst

Cap One BAs are heavy strategy/SQL analysts. If you want to go into analytics DS, this is a good option.

Tech is pretty unstable, and the storm will hit soon. Would suggest you just go to Capital One for the pay. Capital One uses fairly modern tech anyways, so you’ll have the tools and data to do side projects to learn

That’s a big perk for CapOne is they’re a more data driven modernized company. BNY has bad infrastructure and is slow moving. And less money. Downside for capone is less grad school flexibility and a non DS title

If you feel education is a mandatory then I would recommend GT MS in CS with a specialization in Machine Learning. You will have many sleepless nights and sacrifice trips and friendship.

BNY Mellon sucks don’t go there
