I’m joining Uber this fall as an ops analyst and have the option to pick the following, Side note: I currently use a Microsoft surface as a personal laptop and found it to be fairly easy to work with. I’m open to using a Mac, but haven’t in the past so getting use to the layout might be a be a pain.
The new i9 MBP’s are ridiculously fast.
Meanwhile, the 13” is still stuck with a 7th-gen processor unless you add the useless Touch Bar.
True. The touchbar is useless. I use an external keyboard most of the time anyway. So it doesn’t bother me too much. (Except when I am mobile and I’m trying to edit with vim).
What's your profile like?
On other hand get the Windows. Excel and Stat tools them in are ubiquitous. Mac is nice but if you know you're going to write some code get the Mac. Fuckin windows and Ruby gems.
The most code I’ll be using is SQL. I’m leaning towards the dell.
Should be doable. At Tesla, I know we were literally burning our HP Z books, in the name of Tableau extracts. So keep that in mind.
Dell Latitude are cool. I have MBP 13" and it crashes freezes and hangs sometimes especially using external drive. It is good for the terminal and stuff though.
Good to know! And in my case I’ll be doing a lot of analytics and I hear that can be a nightmare using a Mac
Watch out for the MBP’s keyboard.
Yeah my keys especially spacebar got stuck so frequently. A bit better now but I highly recommend a keyboard cover..
^ good to know.
MacBook Pro 15” - anyone on here use it for analytics?
Depends on what kind of analytics. You're going to be heavy on Excel, go to windows. If you're going to use R or Matlab, you're fine with Mac 15".
99% of people at Uber have Macbooks
Is that because they’re considered cooler or because they perform much superior?
Critical mass. Better support if something goes wrong than other platforms. I came from a Windows/Linux background and the keyboard layout on a Mac makes me hate life
15" is big for most backpack

What happens when most of your team is Indian?
I use windows and a linux server at home, so having a mac interface at work separates the environments. Having a windows both at work and at home may lead me to want to game at work and work at home.
