Prepared for almost a year, and applied to multiple companies. Below are the results. All are final TC. Rejects: Capitol 1: ghosted after recruiter call Salesforce: ghosted after recruiter call Stripe: ghosted after recruiter call Expedia: ghosted after phone screen Zillow: ghosted after phone screen eBay: rejected after phone screen Cisco: passed onsite, rejected after an additional round DoorDash: rejected after onsite SAP: rejected after onsite Offers: Oracle: Principal MTS (IC4) - 275k - recruiter ghosted after trying to negotiate MongoDB: Senior Software Engineer - 365k - not too enthusiastic about the work Rippling: Software Engineer (L7) - 220k + 200k paper money Square: Software Engineer (L5) - 385k - recruiter beat offer from MongoDB Microsoft: Senior Software Engineer (63) - 255k - recruiter did not budge after hearing other offers Did not interview with any FANG (I do not consider Amazon due to reputation) because they are not hiring. Microsoft is probably the closest to a FANG. Planning to apply to FANG when they are hiring again. Square and MongoDB offers the highest TC, but I am worried about the quality of work there and the strength of the stock. What a pity that Microsoft did not budge. Microsoft's interview was the most difficult among them all (LC hard in all rounds), and their engineers and work seem most interesting. I am not desperate for money right now, so I am thinking of going with Microsoft and then apply to FANG 1~2 years later. Thoughts? Remember my goal is to get a senior role at FANG down the road. Isn't amazon always hiring
not considering amazon because of reputation
Go with microsoft. A job you like gives you the endurance to stick with it for a while even though it pays less
The goal is to get a good brand and large scale projects on my resume, in order to maximize my chance of getting a senior role at FANG down the road.
Did you have to provide any proof to show your counter offer?
No. Isn't it illegal to show offer to another company due to NDA?
..not in California at least, that sounds crazy. But I have never had a recruiter ask me for "proof", they'd just tell me if they won't move and I walk
Do what you love, love what you do
Taking 130k less for microsoft would be insane. Go with Square
Not desperate for money right now. IMO Microsoft's brand >> Square's brand in front of FANG hiring managers.
I don’t know why you think that - but Squares reputation is pretty strong. Square senior converts to FANG senior easily - MSFT is hit or miss.
Hi congrats on your offers! Would you mind sharing your prep for coding and sys. design? Were most of your coding questions medium difficulty? Thank you in advance.
I grinded leetcode.com for a year. Most interviews are medium difficulty, but Microsoft's are hard difficulty. System design only tests your bullshit skills (collaboration, time management, frame control) in my opinion. I just read a few chapters from Grokking and then learnt by doing interviews.
Congrats on all those offers! The Microsoft one seems a little low, I would expect more like 275-300 if Azure. What's the breakdown and org? FWIW, it's a great company, but compensation is lower than many other top tier companies. Refreshers are not great and vest over 5 years instead of 4 like others. If you aren't as concerned with the money and like the team you're joining, it might be a good option. That being said, that's a lot of money to turn down at Square or Mongo.
185k + 220k / 4 + 25k / 2. Team is within Office. Yeah, I also dislike the discrepancy between the high hiring bar and low compensation at Microsoft.
Why would you choose Microsoft over Square especially given square can get you to any FAAMG or unicorn down the road and stock has lot of potential?
Microsoft's interviewers and their projects impressed me more. I lacked experience in large-scale systems, and the team has it. I feel that companies like Square come and go every few years. The stock is potential in both directions.
Congratulations! How many Leetcode did you solve?? And where to start with for a newbie??
If you are already at Apple, you are not a newbie. I did about 700 over a year, which is probably an overkill TBH. I do leetcode to reduce stress, which became an addiction basically.

If you are on visa, MS in the current market, else Square.
Yes, I am on visa. Microsoft engineers that I interviewed with also seem smartest.
