Which team would you join
What I often see is, smart folks can make a project great, not the other way round
If it’s a potential good project and you are smart, you can lead the average folks to be smart and end up with a good project + good team. Smartness of a team is determined by the smartest person on the team, provided that this person is willing to mentor.
Well said what if your manager and other top management is also just about average. Find it frustrating to get them on same page feel that same efforts can yield higher results when top management is technically on same page
Ability to execute and collaborate effectively is far more valuable than a good idea. Retail fashion is not nearly as cool as the next search engine or social network, but success is financially better than failure in any market

Modi is a legend, will be remembered for centuries to come
The idea is that if you’re working around average folks, you’re going to learn average practices and therefore be average just by environment alone. The success of the “potentially good project” hinges on having smart folk making right decisions from bottom up. The potentially good project will have a lower likeliness of becoming good. IMO picking the former is the better choice for a long term play.
