Question in title. For example, Microsoft used to follow the bell curve for rewards. But the culture has improved so much since they stopped.

Rip to those who believe it’s completely gone in microsoft . It still exists but hidden
Amazon. The reward is not getting fired
Nearly every company does this to a certain extent. Perhaps not a true stack rank but ensuring every team of a certain size fits the proscribed curve.
This. Even if it’s not codified in a written process, it’s still done nearly everywhere. It’s human nature.
Wether they tell you or not they all do it. Each team has a budget to spend on raise, bonus and stock each year. How do you think they spread that limited amount of capital? It’s still there at Microsoft when your boss has to decide if he gives X+100 to you and Y-100 to one of your peer. You think he doesn’t do it based on oh I’d stack rank you above him? Please. It’s there except now it’s all hidden and has no open debate in a room with several people. The opportunities for abuse are way worse but hey “we don’t stack rank!”… lol You want that tied to performance or based on a secret sauce behind the scene built around who’s friend with the person holding budget allocation? I swear people would rather live in ignorance cause being blind “improves culture” than have a slightly more transparent system…
