Who (and how) actually recovered from a burn out ?

I am so burned out, cant write a single line of code, procrastination at its finest(not due to heavy workload but toxic political culture that drained my energy). Wont get into the details, but quitting isn’t an option because of immigration and financial constraints. Already took a long break which actually made things worse because of the contrast between the good time I had while on break and my job situation I dislike. TLDR : seen a lot of similar posts about people suffering from burn out, but few stories of recovering. If you recovered from a burn out how did you do it ?#roku

In a similar situation but I’m changing jobs soon, I hope my burnout doesn’t carry into the next 🤣🤣🤣

Dont take that break if you are already struggling.Made things way worse for me at least. I went from little productivity pre-break to no productivity post-break

How long was your break?

I was once in a similar boat, but the burnout from a startup job hit me even harder after I changed jobs. It only got better after I took a family vacation of 10 days to a national park. It changed everything.

What exactly changed ?

The fatigue and burnout was gone by the end of vacation. The desire to run away from work, people around you, the monotonous life went away after actually “running” away for 10 days. YMMV but I need a vacation of more than a week to really recharge.

It's not possible to recover from burnout I'm afraid. Just have to deal with it

I was alone at the time of my burnout. Had just graduated, all of my friends had moved out and I didn't really have anyone to hang out with after work. It got to the point that I was close to getting fired from my job and deservedly so. I later found out one of my closest friends from highschool was moving to NY, so we rented an apartment together. My work ethic has been great since then. My social life is a little better and I've been going out a lot more. I think the whole change of scene did the trick for me. Not saying you should move places or move in with people, even, but maybe develop a hobby that involves staying away from your laptop/phone screen and do something that involves meeting new people. Just anything that's different from what you've been doing up until now in your free time.

Immigration constraint is the issue.

Wow you just summarized me. I am so burnout that I can't even write four paragraphs like you did in order to tell others about myself. I just can't bother to explain anything to anyone anymore. But I can read through the comments to see if someone found a solution :)

I’ve been in burnout twice. The only things that helped were time off / leave and finding a different job. The first time I worked in another industry and ended up quitting with no other job lined up and living off savings while recovering for several months before finding a better job. The more recent time was last year;I had been seeing a therapist for more than a year and she encouraged me to take leave to remove work as a stressor. I took the time to really focus on undoing the damage burnout had caused over years and got mentally prepared for job searching. I found what I believe will be a better role for me and will transition next month.

Did you have trouble finding work after long layoffs?

Google vida7 Aug 26, 2021

No, it didn’t take that long once I was focused on job searching, maybe a month. The job I got back then paid about the same as the previous one and had better WLB.

What toxic culture at roku? Like bad manager or bad team?

@OP, I recovered from a severe burn-out last year. Despite all the other advices... DON'T just GO TO BREAK!! Write down your long/short term goals on a paper. Do at least 2-3 of the easiest ones on that list. Once you're done with that... Then go on break... On your break always tell yourself how good you did in achieving few of the goals. That will help you get more confidence/healing. That way you'll have something to be proud of and will give you hope to go. Worked out for me.

Sounds like solid advice^^^
