My friend is in DevOps and he basically goes around and shaves millions off his company's AWS bill. He's grossly underpaid and knows it but doesn't negotiate because he likes the flexibility of his particular job.

Developers are on the revenue side of the balance sheet. DevOps is on the expense side. Profit centers always make more than cost centers.
