Why Google is struggling to compete with OpenAI

People OpenAI researchers are largely ex-Googlers Resource OpenAI get compute resources from the biggest company on Earth, Microsoft. Essentially unlimited resources Technology OpenAI tech is built on the state of the art Transformers paper from Google TC With all the hype and investment, they can afford to give 2M TC for 6yoe They have all the weapons from Titans to fight with the Titan.

From what I learned about Google emps on Blind is that, they're either coasting or (leet)code monkeys who can't think critically. Sure, there're exceptions, but I am having a hard time believing otherwise.

They hire great competitive programmers not great engineers.

Way off base. In my 8 years in the industry (3 companies) my team at Google is by far most impressive. Everyone I’ve met is qualified and very bright. Not a single “how did they end up here?”

Microsoft TravKelce Feb 24

Because Google is in its twilight phase. It’s riding its laurels of the 2000s and is essentially MySpace now just will be a couple more years before it starts to get deprecated. Was a good run though. 👍

Why do you believe Google has trouble competing with OpenAI? Seems like the offerings are pretty similar. OpenAI was able to release first bc as a startup nobody cared that ChatGPT hallucinates. If Google had released a hallucinating LLM before ChatGPT everyone would have freaked out.

Google ColOTruth Feb 24

In fact, they freaked out about Google's hallucinations even after they'd seen what GPT does. https://www.reuters.com/technology/google-ai-chatbot-bard-offers-inaccurate-information-company-ad-2023-02-08/

Google · cee OP Feb 24

A couple reasons: Whether we make better LLMs or not, it is likely to affect Google’s bread and butter so Google needs to figure out how to make money from LLMs Also the household name for AI is going to OpenAI. The biggest influence from that is the next talents going to OpenAI instead of Google. The crazy TC diff is cherry on top.

It's not clear that it matters.

The premise of the question is wrong

Right now the problem plaguing Google is lack of risk taking and an insane amount of censorship. If waymo was owned by Elon musk, it would have been launched in seven countries by now. But Google is just waiting to lose that race to someone else. Google nest? Amazing product, ready to make use of LLMs. But awful strategy. By now, Satya nadella would have outsourced the technology and allowed other companies like Samsung etc to build and sell hardware. Sundar pichai seems like he deliberately wants to kill Google as long as he and his Indian friends get paid.

Google · cee OP Feb 24

Bro if Elon ran Waymo, it wohld have launched in seven countries, probably killed people, and got permanently banned. [see cruise] Some things need to take time

Google qcdpom Feb 24

we don’t need to go down a rabbit hole but that is not elon’s biz track record. None of his endeavors have failed like Cruise but have instead made him among the top handful of richest people

Its not about the tech at all. The biggest problem for google is the success of their own AI would destroy their own search business. Its self cannibalism and they are literally trapped. Its a damned if you do and damned if you dont moment for them. The AI wave basically benefits every other company, with the extremely notable exception of google, which is why their stock will never moon like nvidias even assuming (generously) that they have the best AI. The only way for google to come out of this and retain their current position is if they find a way to monetize AI at a similar level that they can currently monetize search, which is basically impossible. AI queries cost 10x compared to search and have basically no ads. Im not saying they'll die, they still have youtube and android and like a hundred other things, but they will be basically knocked down from being one of the top companies in the world. Face it, the reign of google search is at an end.
