Boomer parents were impressed I made 80k out of college, my dad told me he thought I would have made 40-50k with a Bachelor’s in CS. I was going to jump ship at 90k/2 yoe and my parents told me I made a very healthy salary and should be loyal to my current company. I left now make 240k TC at 4 yoe but I know many people are pulling significantly higher. Why do so few people know that tech pays well?
Your parents != the whole world
Are my parents like most boomers? They often give unsolicited job advice that is always off the mark
So true!!
Not all tech jobs pay well.
True😂
Can you tell me how much the average Finance first year makes? What about a first year resident? An apprentice electrician? People don’t know because, in general, they don’t care or it doesn’t matter to them. Until you’re looking for a new career or to start a career you won’t care what each industry makes.
How would they know? Most people don’t have close enough relationships with engineers at big companies to know their TC, and engineering is not visible to the public like doctoring. It’s also not glamorous in the media like finance.
They gonna know. How would they know? How would they know. I just…
Also geographically very segmented to Seattle/SF
Because it doesn’t matter. Do you actually feel like your life is much better than anyone else making 50-60k out of college? TC is just a number.
For your parents' situations, you already mentioned it - they are boomers lol
A subset* of tech pays well
The high TC is literally 5-7 years old. Chill. Not even so many smart Ivy League graduates know tech pays so well. So you see them going into law finance
Yeah^
…or becoming ‘founders for life’
Shhhh
Some in consulting and finance don’t think tech is prestigious, it’s not “old money” and often associated with a bunch of nerds
We’re not concerned with life on the plantation and your references to “old money”
