Why can we not work from outside the US?

I’m really pissed about this. People working for other firms are able to do this without a problem. We have a policy against International Telecommuting which I plan on respecting; I know people have been fired at Accenture for not following this rule. McKinsey is a stickler for this policy too. But why?! Why can we just not move past this especially in a global pandemic? I know people in Tech who are working remotely from Mexico now, and their firms have approved it. What’s worse is that some people are stuck in places due to covid yet no exceptions are made for them. Thoughts?

We’re in the same boat. Our company said due to tax treaty, we can’t wfh from home country

Moving forward we might get more clarity, but I lean more towards intra-country location independence than inter-country location independence. Reasons range widely from: political, immigration, international tax, border rules, etc. Basically as a country, it doesn't want to risk it's employees working from another country. Primarily because employees are an intangible asset to the corporation and the country. The opportunity cost is very high even if you consider reduced pay, more tax (both to employer and employee) because of hiring an international worker, etc.

But that’s just it. You’ve hired the international worker already, you’re not going to pay taxes to a country he’s in temporarily, and unless it’s China where there are many negative connotations about how data is handled over the internet, your data isn’t being siphoned by the govt. Let’s not forget that consulting companies have member firms / branches all around the world that are fully functional.

Deloitte notaBTA OP Dec 29, 2020

BigDad, consulting companies have offices everywhere across the globe. The point I’m making pertains to people hired for the US offices in the US who live in the US but are outside of the country for any reason in the pandemic. Consulting companies will not allow such people to open their laptops and work outside the 50 states.

I get if it’s tax issues between countries, but Google and Facebook offering this option. If one US company can do it, why not the others?

Google ТС or GTFO Dec 29, 2020

It’s because your company is also an audit firm so they’re strict to avoid liability (taxes, laws, etc.). We can only work from places where we have the right to work (Residency or citizenship) so I wouldn’t be able to work from Mexico.

Visa zxcv7 Dec 29, 2020

Yeah, Visa won’t allow us to wfh from home country either

Okay so put it this way....what if you just “go on vacation” for 90ish+ days...whatever time frame doesn’t that doesn’t require any approval from your job....how would they know that you’re not in Los Angeles for example and you’re really in the Yucatán peninsula in Mexico....what if you still have your home in the USA but you’re out of the country for the duration of the pandemic....OR you put your things in storage and ask a friend if you can use their USA address....you still keep your US citizenship and identification but you’re in Turks and Caicos for however long their country allows “visitors”....as far as working from home in another country I’m assuming you’ll only need great wifi and all of your equipment. Still pay your US taxes but you’re just on extended vacation in Thailand. Right? 🤷‍♀️

Deloitte notaBTA OP Dec 29, 2020

It is physically possible, but if you do what you’re suggesting without telling anyone, you may get fired if they find out since there are very strict policies against working from abroad.

Slack kBBU13 Dec 29, 2020

Go work for a startup. I’m sure they’ll let you work from anywhere as long as you deliver. As others say, bigger companies probably think about liabilities in terms of letting employees work from their home countries.

Conduent Mile Dec 29, 2020

Last company had salary levels set by country - if you went to Mexico they would want to drop your salary to the rates for that country, change benefits, too. Plus they were strict about data security and access.
