Curious, when Lyft and Uber users make requests for rides on the platform (or even pay for a monthly subscription to the passes) they pay directly to Lyft and Uber via payment collection platforms like Stripe and Braintree, therefore circumventing the Apple and Google payment processing. Meanwhile when game developers like Fortnite attempt to do the same thing they get removed. What’s the difference between these use cases? Are there nuances that make the two applicants different?
They are used for physical services in the case of Uber and Lyft
I can understand how a ride is a physical service. But there are also gift cards you can buy on both playforms, or even monthly subscription services which only give you “perks” like free delivery or guaranteed no surge pricing when you are requesting (separate transaction) rides or food delivery. Those seem more like digital goods, no?
Fortnite should just include some cheap toys that get shipped out wheh someone buys something virtual. Maybe that will circumvent the Apple nazi and Tim crook.
Fortnite is just bargaining. WordPress however is open source and apple threaten them to have them add in app purchase BS to get it listed. Come on, what is next? Red Cross and Salvation Army get delisted if they don't make a cut to Apple? I think very soon we will see new HTML extensions that lets you run 3D accelerated games and everyone will bypass app store for that. I am not sure what will Google and Apple do when that movement starts.
And who control browser landscape!!!
You can always install chrome or Firefox on apple too
Why don’t they have a virtual currency that’s ~10% cheaper if you buy it on their website? You buy the currency on the website - it’s in your account and you can spend that currency on goods in the app?
You cannot, the app store mandate same price same term.
What if you only made certain items available on the website? Like specific skins etc
Epic signed and entered into an agreement, intentional breach of contract then now act like they are the victim? 🤦🏻♂️
While this is true, it’s rather simplistic to say “well you signed the dotted line” if the original contract has monopolistic and anti-competitive terms baked into it. I get the argument that if some builds a home, they should be able to make income renting it out. But I also think if there are only two types of homes in the entire world and they are owned by two companies, then there should be regulations that are in place to prevent the two from taking advantage of their duopoly. Also, for Android, there are alternatives to the App Store, people can directly download the APK from Epic and install it. There are also other app stores on Android by different companies (Samsung, Amazon). Why should iPhone users not have the freedom to install their own software of the hardware they purchased and own?

The 30% only applies to digital goods...not real world items / services
But the subscription services are just digital goods. Like Uber Eats pass or Lyft monthly ride pass.
You're paying for a physical good / service... The app store guidelines specifically mention food delivery and ride sharing as giving no commission to Apple
