In US, entry level can even be 150-200 k USD, senior can be 300 k even 400 k USD, while in Europe , entry level is normally < 40 k USD, senior is only around 70 k USD. In other countries, salary is even much cheaper. With the human cost in US, company can hire 5 excellent engineers in EU. If I run a company, I will hire the best engineers in EU with 150 k USD (absolute much more than the market rate), rather than paying 400 k USD to hire an ordinary person in US. Also considering that now lots of companies allow employees to work remotely forever (twitter, Airbnb, Shopify etc...... ), does employees's physical location really matter to the company ? Why my salary is lower if I sit in Canada / EU rather than US (while I am doing the same work) #amazonsalary #salarycomparison #us #europe #facebooksalary #googlesalary #netflixsalary #applesalary #software #engineering #software #swe

Pinterest vs Reddit Offer Evaluation
canada and the eu have labor laws(that work)
US SWE are just better
Lol pretty entitled. Seems like there is a separate version of World Wide Web and stackoverflow for US based SWE where they can get secret sauce to debug issues
With 150k , you can hire very ordinary Swe in us. But in Eu. You can hire the most excellent talents
TC and YOE please. Thnx >_<
The real reason is visa laws are strict in US. If visa was much easier then US wouldn’t have higher salary. US has shitty country laws wise so employers keep employees on knees even for basic stuff like health insurance, work visa etc so to bait people to work under draconian laws. They gotta pay higher. If US & Europe paid similar. People would prefer living in Europe rather than US where people get killed in Walmart
Then if you run the company , why don’t you hire swe from Eu? In eu there are so many talented engineers , and can easily attract the best engineers if you just offer 1/4 of the Us salary
If I was paid the same everywhere id go to the place with least taxes(US). EU and Canada have more than 42% tax for middle class. Kinda nuts.
You get what you pay for.
Lol deal with it
Lot of factors may influence this decision. To mention only few, the cost of human resources in western Europe is also very expensive. Graduate engineer salary package say in the Germany, Netherlands, UK, scandics would start around 50K EUR out of which an income tax between 40-50% would be withheld. The employer would have to pay the same percentage of taxes to the state. The US is much different in this regards with corporate and employee taxes are much less than the EU. Having said that, the amount, extent and quality of social services that one gets in EU do not even exist in the US. Also some US companies prefer to have dev teams located closer to their headquarters rather than scattered around the globe.
Region instability. Imagine having your core dev team in Russia. Ukraine war happens and then all funds to Russia are blocked. Now you can’t pay your devs and you have no core dev team.
Do not use extreme example. Why not have a core dev in Spain , Netherlands , Uk, Sweden , Germany etc… ?
U are saying Sweden and Germany are super safe from political climate change? The point of having core dev in the US is because the company is US. Therefore, more control over things.
There are not that many SWEs in the world to meet the demand. They need all of them. Cheap and expensive both.
Pay 150K usd in Eu. And you can easily attract the best engineers and experts
And they will only work 9 to 5 and aren't that great. (I used to work in the EU.. their work ethic is shit )
Capitalism my friend. Uncle Sam does everything on the extreme end. Be glad that you don’t have homeless people running half naked around your street and shitting in front of your house. There is no social security in US. Everything is business for US even if it requires crushing weaker section of the society. In Short, US is like Amazon, teammates don’t look out for you. You look out for yourself same with government doesn’t have your back so you look out for yourself I firmly believe affordable healthcare is fundamental right of Americans. Currently, bills are 10x their feasible amount. And there is no justification for inflated healthcare prices other than looting pockets of average Americans PS: US isn’t for everyone. It is for crooked people with selfish and individualistic attitude who only care about their pay check. The amount of tax people in US are paying is going towards funding war, bailing out banks and other billionaires who are paying close to nothing in taxes. US is nexus of crooked politicians + ultra wealthy billionaires who have framed rules for peasants working for their masters and making them rich. Surely, some of the peasants might rise up in ranks and get richer but for majority things are moving away from affordability. This is like there is smoke in the town. Certainly, there would be fire in someone’s house. But people don’t give a shit unless that fire catches their home. The economic divide will definitely lead to some civil war soon. It is just matter of time.
> There is no social security in US. Well according to my paycheck, there is, and IT IS TAKING UP TO $9,114 FROM ALL OF OUR POCKETS!
"There is no social security in US" You know, besides actual social security? Medicare? Unemployment? Welfare? Sure it's not as comprehensive as EU, but still?
