Would love some insight from Tesla engineers. Seems pretty sudden, and I don't buy the "get back to chip design" statement put out by Tesla. Seems like he could have worked out a way to stay at Tesla and focus on the chip stuff there if both sides wanted him to stay. Are Pete Bannon and all the AMD guys that joined Jim's team at Tesla going to stick around?
We paid him a shit load of money since we have a lot leftover from skimping on the regular rank and file and H1-Bers.
Good place to cruise and I'm sure he's getting a blank check to do whatever he wants as long as it relates to CPU design. He's been the CPU lead for AMD and Apple. Nvidia doesn't fit the CPU narrative.
Because of the "interesting problem to solve" BS that HR and HM always say. Maybe more power and money? Made to be a successor of the CEO role?
I don’t think he is looking for the next challenge. He was probably being driven too much by Elon at Tesla. And he now needs a place where he can take decisions independently and work as much as he wants. This is why he left Apple. Intel and AMD are the places where he can stick around and do as he wish. He does not want bosses half his age telling him what to do.
He was in charge of a few 100s of people, he will have an org of multiple thousands. He’ll work on the future Xeon CPUs. This is one of the top position in the world for a chip architect. I understand him!
Were you in Keller's org at Tesla? Everything was fine at Tesla, he was happy in his job, and then he decided to leave those 100s of people because a better job at Intel opened up?
Yes I was reporting to Jim directly. I’m not in his head, but internally he was very appreciated and involved. This also an exhausting position, this may have played a role.
