Today I was reading many discussions about people complaining they can't afford to live in Seattle BRK (Bellevue, Redmond, Kirkland). A decent house there goes from $1.5-2M and that's a lot. However, with the huge tech TC's why aren't more people willing to live a little further out and reduce their COL to a third of what they are looking at. They could be in a situation where they can pay off a house within 10-15 years on their salaries even at current interest rates. For example, what is wrong with this $500k house only 45 minutes away from Google's office in Kirkland? https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/11826-SE-254th-St-Kent-WA-98030/48896174_zpid/
You think you can get to and from Kirkland in 45” from there 🤡
It's less than 25 miles from the Google office. Maybe 1 hour with traffic.
Because people don't want to spend 2 hrs driving every time they want to go somewhere, anywhere at all.
Location, location, location
Schools are not very good
Because in the US, everything outside of a stone’s throw of a major city is a wasteland full of bigotry, stroads and a severe lack of amenities. You can’t even get vegan options at restaurants anywhere between the coasts except for Chicago. Barbarians out there.
😂😂😂
I think it’s a cultural thing. In Texas, people will drive 45 minutes just to go to a better coffee shop. In a lot of cities, people want to take public transportation. I remember growing up in the Midwest, people were like “15 minutes away? FUCK NO.” If I moved to Seattle, I’d buy that a house in that area for sure, although it’s a little small
Lol, for Canada/Australia that's an average/big house for sure. And comparing to the rest of the world it's a mansion.
Yeah not in Texas lol but still, commute doesn’t even bother me, I used to drive an hour each way with tolls in Texas and it’s just cost of doing business
Because TC are also overpriced
This house is extremely small and very plain. I wouldn’t want to live here even if my commute was 10 minutes.
I think OP coulda found a better example
I agree this looks better https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/25854-118th-Pl-SE-Kent-WA-98030/49052349_zpid/ However, the house I showed would be more than enough for me personally and if ever I have a family.
This is not apples-to-apples comparison. This house is smaller and in an uglier street than a typical 1.5M BRK home.
Cause everyone is going back to an office and commuting sucks. Also those schools are absolute trash.
I just looked at the high schools in the area. While they aren't world class, they seem about average. With the cost savings one could definitely get more tutoring/private lessons.
Good private schools can run 40k / year k-12 per kid. School need to be 8+ to be acceptable for many folks. Its also not just about education -- its the peers they hang out with.
