My friend bought a $1.4m home, spent another $30k on modeling, which doesn't even have lawn on all 4 sides, common walls on both sides, commute is close to hour, sometimes longer working hours, not much time to cook and eat healthy, and life is monotonous and lonely (in his words). Why do people stay in the Bay? Most people would probably save the same amount in a cheaper place. Kids will grow up in more open spaces with friendlier people who are not running the race but actually leading a happier life, commute will be less which would mean more energy and time. Lesser competitive people would mean more time to pursue hobbies. If not, is life there all about retiring early with the money saved?
TC...but I hate the bay, very easy for people with tech skills to live elsewhere
Move to Seattle area, similar pay amongst FANG and MS. And for that money you can buy top end new homes with 40minutes commute. And lower taxes too
Not for 1.4M, you will likely get a shitty townhouse for that money. Seattle got rather expensive too...
And stay home all day because it's raining outside?
Opportunity. Can get an interview every single day of the week to some really high paying job. I've lived all over the US and that just doesn't exist in any other city, for tech at least.
Gone are the days when Bay area is the only thing for tech. Fb, appl, Salesforce, are all doubling if not tripling their hiring here, let alone MS and Amzn. Why should one be so insecure once you land a FANG or MS job? Work there for few years. Work hard, prepare well and land a job in one of these And then moving to Bay area later if you need is easy. Make sure u go there for the right solid opportunitiy and not just because you may want to hop around. I have lived there and moved here. Earned more, save more and landed top offer here. Better commute, lower taxes. If Cloud excites you, Seattle area is the place to be and get a much better lifestyle.
Hi jango, could you give ballpark take home pay for your TC in Seattle? Kinda wondering if 0 state tax actually saves money or do you end up giving it up else where?
TC. No other reason anyone would live in an that overpriced homeless rathole town.
Misconception. Just trying to help here. Know a good set of folks at FANG and even at MS who have landed same or better than California offers for the same level.on the flip side if you try to relocate for the same company from Seattle to Bay area, they only give you a 10-15% base pay hike. And that's nothing
That's understandable. My point was merely that no one would flock to a city like that where the average home is reaching north of $1.5 mil without any way of paying for it. Just look at that post below that mentions if you have a TC of $500K - $1 mil. The foreclosure and short sale market is going to surge again with the next recession.
Why the heck are you worried about others' choices? Stop being preachy and live your life.
Some people are curious, this is framed as curiosity motivated by judgement, not a rhetorical question.
There's a way better way to put it if intended instead of downplaying a choice. It just shows OP's ignorance
Lol! There are so many touristy things everywhere. Flight to Hawaii? LA/SD seriously? Your "house theory" sucks as OP's. Zoos, schools, and shit are everywhere You can go on with all these typical reasons to satisfy yourself. Come up with something unique
Sounds great! "If your individual TC is $500+ or household TC of $1M+"
Bay Area provides an opportunity to work in early startups , if the startups go ipo, then you are net worth possibly goes in millions in about 5 -6 years Landing in an ipo is just through contacts and relationships , you won’t get that if you keep living in other states
California was also all about a gold rush 170 years ago. A few people struck it rich. A larger number found a single large nugget or sold supplies to prospectors and were comfortable or even better than comfortable . The vast majority worked very hard and eked out a living. This is working for startups at minimal cash wages then equity ends up worthless or if they are a little lucky maybe almost make up for the 6 years of poor salary when the startup is bought for ok but not great money. Yes there are more startups here , but very few of those make anyone wealthy . Even founders at a successful one generally end up with ok, but not set for life money. https://www.financialsamurai.com/candid-advice-for-those-joining-the-startup-world/
It all comes down to your priorities and what makes you happy. You can stay in Midwest or south and have peaceful and happy life, have a big house with yard and not die of depression and hypertension
I’ve lived in the Midwest and south, and there are just not as many job opportunities for people in tech. I could barely get people to look at my resume when I lived in those places. the Bay Area is the best place for my career, hence why I moved here.
Here's a better question: What TC cut (either in dollars or %) would people accept to move out of the Bay area?
Think it depends on COL where you go. It’s not so much the TC cut as the change in bottom line that matters.

I have been wondering the same thing. There are so many great places to live in the US and abroad why force yourself to stay in this one area that is extremely expensive and congested
