If you go on LinkedIn and look at the employee there’s like 1% Indians. Compared to other big tech where it’s 40% minimum Even at other research companies like Deepmind it’s 1/3 Indian
Let it become a more stale company where TC maximizing and empire building becomes the norm.
Same reason companies like Nvdia, Meta, etc are growing while some others are hiring freeze or layoff. You see the pattern
Nvidia has tons of Indians lol
Indians on H1B tend not to prefer working for startups. But once OpenAI took off, a lot of them joined there. Many are in key positions.
I think Indians in general are more risk averse
Even then, I most I know would not take the risk to even apply
Because they want to win, not eat Biryani
Win AND eat biryani, even better 👍
Win to eat biryani everyday!
Indians want a stable company with “prestige”. OpenAI has that now so we will join in droves.
Who cares? Only racists are obsessed with race
Only idiots don't see and explain patterns
People who play a racist card left and right must be banned from anonymous platforms like Blind
It's a startup. Less demand for some reason. Never understood why.
Idk you’d think the $900k would be enticing
Some cultures want cash, name recognition, and just general do better working for someone else due to education system. Why anyone works for anyone else never made any sense to me though except for retirement
Are there typically a lot of Indians in ML? I think they’re mostly software engineers or PMs.
I mean normal MLE at tech companies there’s a good amount. Never worked in a research type environment so cannot compare. If you look at deepmind you can see a big difference between OpenAI Anthropic is even lower
4 reasons why OpenAI/Anthropic and other AI/ML startups have lesser number of Indians. 1. All these AI startups like OpenAI are born out of San Francisco. And Indians largely avoid San Francisco due to insanely high rent and traffic commutes from South Bay where the majority of them reside due to good school districts for their kids. 2. Indians are largely risk averse so startups is only if they are really passionate about a particular domain or field. 3. Less no of Indians in AI/ML domain compared to Chinese and other races. Most of the Indians are non IITians who happen to take the generic software engineering route which does not require a specialized PhD. 4. Less of Indian managers at these startups. Even less no of FOB Indian managers with Indian accents. Most Indians get hired because the hiring managers are Indians. If the hiring manager is of Chinese origin then it's even more rare to get hired. White American managers may look down on the accent of the FOB INDIANS and may reject them due to culture fit. Most of the Indians you see at OpenAI are American citizens with an American accent so they are a good culture fit as compared to FOB Indians.
