Ive heard this too - or at least a shitshow. But, have yet to get any specifics. Can say that I’ve recently started working with 2 engineers on that side that are great.

I can say I been working a bit with an excellent principal-level engineer on payments, as well as some cool design folks. To be fair, most of the hectic stuff I heard about was about 1.5-2 years back. As you probably know by now, eBay split with PayPal about… 2.5 years ago, and baked a homegrown solution (Managed Payments). Mission critical stuff, so could see why the work would all be high priority. Do you have any contacts you could talk to? If not, DM me and I can ping my contact for some insight.
I am part of Payments. I have a good WLB. It’s surely team dependent, but I don’t have the impression it’s a bad WLB across the org.
Find out what the promotion process in the team is like. If it involves you writing an extensive brag sheet of your own achievements, which will be used against you to gaslight you, stay away. There are definitely some super toxic teams and managers here, growth is super slow unless you play games. But not all teams are like that.
I never referred to payments team at eBay as toxic.
