Elon keeps saying they might go bankrupt. Looks like Twitter has empires of infrastructure teams. Why not switch to aws/gcp, fire the infra teams and ask aws/gcp to take shares instead of cash for the bills Just the marketing Elon gives is worth the cost for the cloud players. Then there is no cash burn from this
Ok thomas
Doesn’t cloud cost more in longer run? Cloud is good for startups.
Who’s going to handle the migration? He laid off half his engineers, Twitter is stuck on KTLO now.
Not sure if you are aware how infra is run at scale. You still need teams to manage them. Just that you now manage infra on cloud instead of on prem. It might help with reducing physical DC management but you still need your infra teams
This.
@Walmart eh he’s half right. E.g. they could have half to a third the infra team being on the public cloud. Issue is they already did such a layoff and are on ktlo mode
Twitter is a massive public cloud customer already
Twitter uses GCP Many teams have migrated to GCP and some are yet to move ( sorry rest of them have already been fired)
Why do you assume public cloud is cheaper? There are definitely circumstances where public cloud is more expensive
Fuck expensive or not. Consistent tech stack keeps the knowledge transferable and prevents red taping by long haulers who used to use tribal knowledge of archaic tools and systems to keep their positions safe and dominate design discussions
Wtf kind of logic is this? Why would any sane leadership move from a working solution to a multi yr project to migrate to a costlier platform?! Especially during a time when the majority of tech team has been fired
Snub of Azure?
Twitter already uses GCP?
And it’s extremely expensive.

What happens when most of your team is Indian?
They've done the math in the past and found that cloud will cost more. Besides, moving the existing infra to the cloud now would require rewriting much of the codebase, and will probably be a multi-year task will thousands of engineers. Not the best use of their resources right now.
This guy thinks they willy nilly decided to build worldwide infrastructure instead of using public cloud
twitter was around before public cloud tho
