We all hate Comcast/Xfinity. But doesn’t more company enter this industry? A similar approach in the mobile plan is google fi. I think more competition in the ISP would create better service for customers.
Don't worry, SpaceX will save us again
Counting on starlink .. any day now (?) (Seattle beta program)
I really, really hope this is the case.
In the US, infrastructure is super political. Have to get permits etc. This is for every neighborhood. If the US can turn masks into a political issue, do you think laying network cables would be an easy task? That's how they maintain monopolies Google fi has cables already laid out ready to be activated, but some court blocked it.
Also Google has more incentive to focus on amping up GCP connection than worrying about consumer traffic
There is WaveG, Spectrum which has at least given some competition to Comcast in cities. It's getting there.
Spectrum is trash
I pay for about $40 for 400Mbps to Spectrum, no issues.
Because everytime a new company wants to enter the market, they have lay new cable and have massive infrastructure overhead. Comcast and the other major players have weasled their way into making the barriers to entry too high.
Google Fiber is a thing? Who else would have the infra / resources to do it?
It was trying to be a thing, several years ago
1. Google Fi is an MVNO, not an ISP. 2. It is a scale industry 3. Extremely capital intensive, high CAC 4. Requires decades-long timelines. 5. Subject to extensive local regulation 6. Not sexy, no shiny new objects, everyone will paint you as "greedy" Even for those with deep pockets and great tech people (think Google Fiber), success as an ISP isn't easy. Conclusion: Good luck, blinders!
Barriers to entry are artificially inflated by government that is bought and paid for by Big Telco
Google fi is a scam.
An open opportunity ready to be grabbed ? Startup? Maybe like Isla

What’s gonna happen to TikTok?
Network infrastructure or hardware as a product / service in general is very expensive. Software as a product is much easier to deploy and cheaper to produce
Agreed. But hopefully we don’t stuck with Comcast like companies forever
We've been saying aws should do this since forever but yeah. Exactly.
