This is something i wonder about when I see someone at Amazon put on dev plan and told to start looking for other jobs. The manager does not want the employee any more so he puts employee on dev plan, fine. But instead of this, why not keep the employee off dev plan and tell the employee to look for another team instead? That way the manager no longer has the employee on his team and the employee gets to keep their job by going to a different team. Maybe the employee will do better on a different team that is a better fit. It seems like a win-win to me. Why does this not happen? #tech
Hire and develop the best, PIP THE REST 🍌 🍌 🍌
What are incentives for the best to join this toxic company? They just hire the worst and keep recycling them.
There are none, Amazon is almost entirely fresh grads who don’t know better and people who’ve survived the hunger games long enough that they are now running them. Experienced mid-career people already know Amazons reputation and as a result they aren’t joining or returning.
In most cases the criteria by which managers pick candidates for dev plan is itself rigged/broken, hence the term sh1tsh0w is used quite often in blind to describe dev plans. One of those places where there is hardly any mechanism but only bad intentions. Btw it seems you do not know about the mandatory 10%(more or less) kick out policy every year. If team switch is permitted, the quota will not be met.
Trueee. I have heard that when you put in your 2 weeks notice to your manager, he will try to immediately put you on dev list so that it seems like it is URA and he meets his quota. It also blacklists you from ever returning. Does this really happen?
They have URA quota to fill.
My friend in Amazon told me, Dev plan/pip is an accomplishment for manager, but employee leave is an evidence of lack of leadership. In the most of cases, managers were told by their leads to pip certain number of people, and they have to choose someone.

this is how you are going to choose.
Because shuffling bad employees around is not a win for the company. It’s why most companies don’t allow internal transfers for employees on improvement plans.
