It's all about the Long Tail (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_tail). Basically boils down to you selling less for more money or selling more for less money.
exactly! Apple wants to sells 1.5K devices to 5-800 Million people. Google wants to offer $200-$300 devices to 5 Billion people. I am happy that they offer that option as not everyone has the kind of money we get. The question should be why Apple sells it for 1.5K??
Pretty sure Google just tries to use the products as loss leaders to get them into the "ecosystem". After you have google devices they just get to profit of selling you ads with ultra refined conversions.
Google does not try to ace in anything. Us customer facing peeps are told to praise the competitior before presenting our products. We lack razer sharp focus and pricing gimmicks that companies like Apple employ. The philosophy is different. Most Cloud vendors talk about Shared responsibility, Google calls it shared fate. It's possible they try to ace a hardware soon though. AI is going to destroy their moat for advertising and search. They might do a massive pivot and try and grow their hardware presence to keep people on their services.

The money they make off harvesting your personal data for selling ads is what subsidizes the cost of the hardware
