When Google downlevels you from a level, it's because their hiring bar for that level is higher compared to other companies. The higher you go, the more stacked they are with long tenured engineers. All of this is from years of reputation as one of the best places to work with high pay and great WLB. When Google downlevels you from a level and still deems you worthy of an offer, they throw you a bait. Other companies, meanwhile, flat out reject you. And Google continues to do this because they can get with it. People still flock to them because of their consistent reputation as one of the best places to work. Other companies would do the same if they could, but most of them don't have enough of a brand for people to consider them joining for a lower level and/or lower pay. See Meta's recent hiring struggles where they literally needed to pay above market rate to hire senior engineers. So why is Google downleveling a bad thing? From Google's perspective it makes perfect sense because this leads to naturally raising their bar (e.g., external L4s working as internal L3s, external L5s working as internal L4s). It may be a bad thing for you specifically because other companies gave you offers with inflated titles so you felt disrespected. Google still pays very competitively across levels if your interview performance was strong enough. They have enough candidates in the pool where they can optimize for getting the most bang for the buck. So getting competing offers isn't a guarantee that they'll overpay you when someone with a similar interview performance has agreed to join at a lower TC. This effectively allows them to gauge what the maximum market value for a candidate is (based on their interview score). Other companies don't have these kind of resources and luxury, so they just end up enticing candidates with higher level and pay.
Lol. Didn't realize Google had a position titled "PR on blind". Were you downleveled for that role? :P
Idk care about down leveling. If my pay is more than my previous job then who cares. It's not I am gonna get more dates on Tinder if I am L5 vs L4.
Unless the Tinder girl is L5 at Google..
Just have to be compatible. She can be taller and richer. I don't care.
I can never understand the morons who accept a paycut to work at Google.
Does it really happen in reality tho? Only top tier tech companies can pay more than Google. If you are already at a top tier tech company, the Google brand is probably less enticing. The only reason I can think of is for senior level+ folks who want to rest & vest and have better WLB and less stress.
My recent L4 offer is way less than what I make at Opendoor
Exactly right! If you think you’re down leveled to the point that doesn’t make sense for your career, then don’t accept the offer! If you still want to work for Google, prepare better, and interview again. Down leveling simply means that you didn’t meet Google standards for the expected role/level. And many people (+ on blind) don’t meet these standards, hence G is consistently one of the most competitive company to interview for!
please continue to be down-leveled. We need more folks like you!
Don’t really care for levels. All about pay. Will always say no thanks if there’s a pay cut
Downleveling is horrible. Because if you previously was a team lead of 5-10 people and now given an IC role at Google - you will be competing for promotion/leadership with many others and may fail for reasons others that your performance. It can be there is not enough headcount to make everyone to be TL of 5 people. Never agree to down-leveling. It will be a huge step back in your career and can put you on wrong trajectory. Having Google on your resume no longer such a big deal like it was 10-20 years ago.
I 100% understand why Google does it and it makes perfect sense. But I'm only ok with lateral moves, not down-leveling. And it also depends on where people are at in their careers. Personally I will only consider lateral moves if it is with a FAANG. If non-FAANG, I need an uplevel. And I won't accept a down-level offer from anyone.
