There "seemed" to be a decent amount of bipartisan support in the House as well as the Senate in the last congress and opportunity to negotiate and reach a resolution. Unclear why unlike the Farmworkers bill and the Dreamers bill, HR 1044 is not getting reintroduced before the March deadline. Thoughts on why and what can be done to help change the status quo? #h1b #greencard
Well, it's in Biden's platform and in his mega immigration bill. So, why not include it as a piecemeal bill as well like the bills for Dreamers and Farmworkers.
because there is no priority to do so. Dems know that dreamers and farm workers are more likelyto vote Democratic. High skilled workers may be Republicans. A number of think tanks have published this over the past year
Indians come from backgrounds that skew conservative.
Where's hooli_xyz aka debzi aka jaded-pro? He used to be 100% sure the bill would pass in 2019 and then again in 2020. Haven't heard from him for a while.
you might wanna finish the last season of SV to learn more about him.
First, bipartisanship is dead. Both parties have their different goals and seems will not work together anymore Second, no one cares about legal immigrants stuck in backlog. No one will help you as there is no incentive/reward for doing that. Third, making calls to house reps to introduce bill and leaving voice mails and expecting something will happen is just living in denial. Finally, make as much money as you can here and have an exit strategy.
Wow Einstein! By that logic why legalize DACA ? Let them have kids who are US citizens and have them sponsor their DACA parents in ~20 years.
Apple the difference is H1b folks are legal and they can be renewed indefinitely, DACA don’t have a legal status ? Comprender?
It’ll likely to come at a later stage.
Stop calling it fairness for high skilled. If it's first come first served, it is NOT fairness for high skilled. The title is a lie.
This. None of these bills have any provision for merit either.
Yes it’s first come first serve model.
I have no problem if the govt wants to better define and regulate high skilled job positions. My job/education level make me qualified - the current situation is unfair because it treats people differently based on an immutable factor (country of birth) that a person has no control over. If you place so much importance on diversity of immigrants, at least make the cap proportionate to the country's population.
The cap is just a soft cap, with spillover, India consistently receives 20% of all EB-GC. India has like 17% of world population. I'd say that's proportionate enough. "My job/education level makes me qualified." That's not your call to make. In a merit-based system, it doesn't matter how much you think you are qualified, it matters how many are better qualified than you and more suited in the jobs climate. There are times when frontline medical staff is short (like this past year.) That would make you less qualified than a nurse. The country's immigration incentives are based on their interest and needs, not yours.
Well said @Microsoft. Proportional to the population was never going to solve this issue, in fact that would likely make things worse. India's backlog is fueled by a trend of people moving to US to get paid stupid amount of money for pushing some keys on a computer. While nurses are making peanuts trying to make ends meet. What's fair to you is not fair to someone else.
Can I just ask, do Indians actually want to live and stay in the US? Because majority of posts on blind seem to always talk about how much people need to make before going back home to India. So is it really that important to get GC? If it's about kids aging out, there are other bills that can be passed for that. At least solving that is more feasible than the bill that's failed for more than a decade.
My impression was most indians come to stay for a few years get some experience and savings and head home. Many want to stay long term and it is quite the insult to see other nationalities have flexibility and options while most are stuck on perma-h1b
As I see it, most just threaten to leave, and it’s only on blind. If they actually did, the backlog would’ve receded by now. The entitled ones of the lot love playing the victim card crying racism and slavery.
@Salesforce they clearly want to stay here and that’s why they are still in the GC queue. With no prospects of getting a GC anytime soon it’s natural for people to feel like a victim. And @Microsoft sorry it’s so inconvenient for you to watch. Yes the backlogged people are so entitled. Do you wish to swap places with them ?
If I were in their shoes I wouldn’t even be here. I don’t see why I’d live a life of uncertainty when I had other options. The world isn’t so small after all. If you choose to make your bed, you should not complain about sleeping in it either.
The real question is how many people apply for GC even with no intent on staying. If the future is uncertain, I'm sure most would apply either way.
