Besides being under a brutal occupation for more than 800 years and their land still occupied by the English, the Irish had nearly half of their population wiped out because of a famine that the English helped create and exacerbated, there were potatoes to eat but the English exported them to England to let the Irish starve to death. Raids on the English guards to try and steal potatoes that were being brought to England resulted in being shot on site. 24 hour guard watch on fields to protect the potatoes from being looted by their rightful owners, the Irish, if you tried to scrounge a single potato for yourself - shot on site. People were resorting to cannibalism, eating dirt, anything that moved in desperation but still millions perished at the hands of the English. The English wanted nothing less than complete enslavement or eradication of the Irish by any means necessary. The Irish were considered non human, animals, property. To this day English society paints the Irish as less than them, uncivilized, stupid.
