Why is affirmative action still around?

I don't like being turned down because of my skin color, nobody does, and it's immoral. Even considering the 60's, when racism was still a major dividing issue, affirmative action sounds like a half-assed approach to fix a problem by creating another problem. And employers accepting these employees, are just doing it for the money. On purpose. And it's just weird. Thoughts? Go nuts.

What do you think happens under affirmative action, especially inside employers?

F5 Networks RedSpectre Oct 25, 2017

OP thinks that more qualified white candidates are actually turned away in favor of under qualified poc. They’re basically living in a late 80’s neocon fever dream.

Microsoft chownus Oct 25, 2017

You think he is delusional? That's rich. We have a lot of Indians, whites, and Asians being turned away in the name of affirmative action. Some must be qualified, but we are constantly told to look for more PoC. We could find someone as good or better, but in the best case we are choosing one candidate based on color if skin when they are equally qualified. Sounds like racism to me. Especially when numbers are not carefully reported on.

We all seem to be ok with sexist racist emails encouraging us to hire/promote one gender or race over another... From the top brass. What if you were right handed and we had promoted 89% right handers and we just need to get more reflective of actual society to be fair and so well... Promote the left handed candidate. I wonder how many of us would switch to ambidextrous. Luckily now we can easily switch gender to get into these protected promoted classes of human. Why work hard when I can take these hormones? Anyone have a tonic I can take to turn myself black?

Logitech czEj24 OP Oct 25, 2017

Microsoft is right, I never put my actual race on a job application. And I noticed an instant uptick in my recruiter calls when I started doing this. I suggest all Asian, Indian and White people, men in particular, to identify as the biggest minority that you can in order to hedge affirmative action. It really will help. If you're down to claim trans, I'm sure that would help for some reason too lol.

Hate to break it to you bud, but race and racism are STILL major dividing issues in America today.

Logitech czEj24 OP Oct 25, 2017

Wtf are you talking about with this "hate to break it to you"?! Thats literally what I'm complaining about in this thread. But for some reason I think you're trying to be "ironic", just sounds dumb AF. Let me guess, you're positively affected by affirmative action? Thought so. Now stfu and behave.

Logitech czEj24 OP Oct 25, 2017

Let me put it in a way you'll understand. Sit down bitch, be humble.

Oracle htjd7mx5 Oct 25, 2017

Because people the same color as you continue to support it. URM will of course support it unanimously so it's up to the majority.

Mitchell dIUd33 Oct 25, 2017

Just curious how many black or hispanic do you actually work with?

Logitech czEj24 OP Oct 25, 2017

This just proves my point. You're not even concerned, in the slightest, about qualifications. You realise that being black or hispanic doesn't automatically qualify you for a job, right? Why should people who are by definition, a minority of the population, occupy a majority or even an equal portion of the workforce? Take you racist bullshit elsewhere.

Mitchell dIUd33 Oct 26, 2017

Holy shitballs you made a ton of assumptions. All I asked was how diverse are the places people work. With some few exceptions most colleges and companies are majority white. What companies do you see hiring more people of color than whites and how do you know whether or not if they are qualified? Go nuts.

Redfin a$apbunny Oct 28, 2017

Companies aren't just hiring POC off the street. If that were the case, all these companies would have much better diversity numbers and would be more willing to share them publicly. No one is disputing the fact that it logically makes sense for there to be more white people in tech (or any industry, for that matter) because they make up a majority of the workforce. However, the key word in underrepresented minorities is 'underrepresented' so to increase that representation, there has been an increase in rhetoric and action to make a more concerted effort to hire from more diverse pools of applicants. This does not mean that by selecting you are a minority on a job application, the chances of you getting a call back increase (your personal anecdotes aren't sufficient to prove this, in fact there are studies that show the complete opposite). A company expanding its recruiting efforts to include HBCU's, for example, is no more affirmative action than only sourcing candidates from Stanford is discrimination.

Groupon sleepy Oct 30, 2017

Does selecting from more diverse pool of applicants mean we'll end up with diverse set of employees?

Mitchell Werxosa Oct 30, 2017

Nope but in general recruiting outside of normal channel gives other folks a shot and as long as the best person gets hired. Isn’t that the best we can do before anyone else complains?

I️ see it as a way to counteract decades and decades of racist hiring tactics, the prejudice that prevents “ethnic” names from getting an interview (proven via numerous studies), nepotism, executive referrals, etc. And I’m ONLY talking about cases when the PoC is just as or more qualified than the other candidates.

Because race and sex are still used by greedy people to keep other people down.

It’s worth looking into unconscious bias. Even many blacks and women are unconsciously biased against other blacks and women. It’s part of our society and we all get conditioned at a young age by subtle things like how different groups of people are represented on television, who we see every day at school and who we don’t. Humans are not rational by default. We do a ton of pattern matching and being unbiased is not something that comes naturally to most people. Affirmative action is not a great answer to this problem, but it is an acknowledgement that we fucked up as a society and we still have not fixed all of our problems around discrimination. It should also be noted that there has been a ton of white male affirmative action that does not get named because it’s just normal for white males to have privileges that others don’t have. It makes sense to complain though because when someone takes away your privilege that sucks because then you’re just like everyone else and who wants society to be fair.
