As recent as 2-3 years ago, companies rescinding offers was seen as very bad, and they would be "named and shamed" on platforms such as Blind and Reddit. Now it seems even reputable companies are rescinding FT offers like its nothing. No shame, etc. For example, Meta just announced bulk FTE offer cancellations even though last month they said FTE offers are safe: https://mobile.twitter.com/gergelyorosz/status/1612568459216556032 Why is this happening to our industry. Put social pressure on companies so they don't rescind offers. Put pressure on government to enact laws to prevent companies from doing this, or pay steep penalties to the affected. #tech #layoffs #rescind
Slippery slope - do you want to give up at-will status , and sign 1-2 year contracts with penalties if you leave early ?
yes. of course. Right now, if I want to change jobs, I have to resign 2 weeks early, and move my house/belongings to another state/country and hope my offer doesn't get rescinded last minute. This incentivizes people to no longer resign with a 2 week notice, and wait until the monday morning of the new job, before resigning at the old one.
2 weeks notice is a courtesy, not a requirement. There are zero laws that state this unless you have a contract So yes , resign on the morning of your 1st day at new job
Weren’t everyone leveraging 4-5 offers to negotiate and reject all of them last minute?
Its a completely different story when you sign an offer… its a commitment from both the employer and employee
No, reneging is not the same as rejecting offers and using them as leverage
You won’t look as bad if every body else is also doing it. At the end of the day a business is about making money and they need to protect the bottom line. Im sure plenty of people will still be applying for jobs at Meta when this recession is over.
"if everybody else is doing it" ah the downfall of the fabric of society
Really makes you want to try adding a contingency when signing an offer for some kind of cash payout in case of offer being rescinded, similar to how they like to have clawback terms for bonuses. Probably wouldn’t work, but it’s really scary to think about giving notice when you’re not even guaranteed severance if they pull the offer at the last moment.
your suggestion will work if most of us job seekers also demand it. If only a small subset of us do, the company will just give the unprotected offer to the next person
or a large company looking for reputation points can start doing this, and we can hope it somehow becomes the norm
Or they can hire you and fire you right after
At least you’ll get severance that way.
nah, severance is not mandatory by law.
It says non-FTE only. That’s a difference if you ask me.
no that was from last month. today they are including fte too
Where did they say they’re cancelling FTE?
It’s happening frequently because the first company which does it is an outlier but if everyone follows the lead then it’s shared load….. I’m Spartacus.
People ghosted employers for 2 straight years, and now employers are doing the same things. Not sure it’s news that there’s shitty people in the world. Also doesn’t make sense to create a new bloated bureaucracy to fix a temporary problem that already has many solutions (including civil suits). If you don’t like it, don’t accept qualified offers OR don’t give notice until you start at the new job.
"OR don't give notice until you start at the new job" exactly. this whole situation incentivizes BAD BEHAVIOR, leading to a downfall of good behavior in the industry as a whole
I agree. But I hope you recognize the reason why TC in the US is so high and so low in the EU by comparison is because of the regulations you are proposing. You don’t get all the benefits of a free market and all the protections of massive government regulations. You only get to pick one.
