If you are looking for diversity equity and inclusion then TikTok is not a place that values diversity or makes conscious efforts inclusion, infact the opposite. The problem isnt at the IC level but more at manager level. TikTok hires managers because they can speak chinese or they are readily available to work late nights and be flexible for hours that suits teams in China. If company culture is important to you then TikTok is not a place that values a healthy positive culture. Leaders will not hesitate for a moment to shame you in large groups, name call you and will always look for someone to point fingers at. With the Chinese suppressive culture, it is expected from IC to be order obeying minions and if you give your own opinion then the Chinese leaders will make it mission of their life to make your existence and work life unbearable in TikTok. It is not uncommon for us to hear stories about some employee had breakdown or someone taking time off to decompress mentally. But inspite, nothing changes and managers/leaders go about their entitled life in TikTok like business as usual and will move on to finding their next target. Hardly I have seen any non-chinese employees staying over a year because of their non-inclusive culture. The tech bro culture is very evident and often unbearable. Career growth is non-evident. You can be working 9*9*7 and already performing at a level above yours and have your hands on all different projects you want, but, we dont have a real leveling criteria so none of it matters and what will matter is how you kiss your managers a** If someone tells you that US teams have autonomy to make their own decisions, thats a lie and run as far away from that as possible. Every decision is made in China and what you work on, how you work on and every other details will be directed by leaders in China, most times they will not share why or other details and most times your input will not matter. No comp adjustments, hardly any promotions and strategically setting people up for failure (most times these are non-chinese folks). To summarize why you shouldnt join TikTok - Lack of diversity and no inclusion efforts, Toxic work culture that pushes people to get burnt out and develop work anxiety, No career growth, No comp increases or promotions and no bonus with negative rating if your manager doesnt like you. And all this will destroy your personal life, personal wellbeing, relations and your peace. And God save you if you are a parent. #TikTok #NotTikTok
Same for eg. Huawei - you are joining chinese army branch, act accordingly.
Sounds like hell for everybody (997), plus a dead end for non Chinese (as there is no dei and set for failure).
Glad I chose linkedin

Do Chinese people count as diversity of they're in leadership roles?
Do bears count as DEI?
I agree that some teams (or even functions) have worse culture and WLB comparing to some companies (maybe many companies). But we do have clear level expectations in engineering, and I do see many promotions happen (some are much faster than Google or MS). There is peer pressure, dependencies on Chinese colleagues, and imperfect process. On the other hand, we manage to build some very competent and talented engineering teams. As an engineering manager, my job is to make sure they can grow and get rewarded accordingly.
Not true, lol.
Does this actually surprise anyone?
