Why would I refer you if I don’t know you?

My reputation is on the line for my referrals, I’m therefore inclined to only refer people I know and have worked with, not randos from Blind. What am I missing? Also our resume to hire rate is so low that my referral bonus expected value is like $40 per and thus not worth my time. TC 450k

Not sure about Apple but at google and fb, you can simply say you don’t know the person.

Huh? Why would it do no good? It gets someone to look at it and make a decision. Also, please get off your moral high horse. It’s embarrassing.

I think people take the time for at least a conversation or two and looking at the potential referrals resume. I dont think people just blindly (pun intended) just put their name in the referral queue. The difficulty is if/when the candidate gets rejected and it just feels awkward for a bit after. However if they get hired and they dont perform its not necessarily 100% referrals reputation, the company did have a part in passing them in the same interviews and decided to make an offer lol

I’ve gotten a lot of opportunities from blind referrals so I would always give back to the community. It’s fine if you see the persons resume. You can still look at it and decide you’re not convinced but I would never just say no.

It looks like you are giving yourself too much importance. For large companies , sometimes I don’t think even referrals matter . I have been referred from engineering managers, staff engineers but did not get a call from companies like amazon, Microsoft, Apple.

Google swinglyf Jan 1, 2020

This exactly. For the rank and file (think everyone below director in big tech), nobody cares to associate your referrals with your reputation. Obviously, if you’re lying in your referrals, that’s a much bigger problem, but that aside... who cares?

Google swinglyf Jan 1, 2020

To discover: referrals do matter in fb and g in terms of the resume getting a look. Beyond that, not much.

Referral bonus

What's OP's comment about 40$ per hire? I guess he's saying there's a low chance of the person getting hired, but still...

Don't your referrals go to the same hiring process. Your reputation is not on the line. No one is hiring your referrals because of you referred them

At large companies, most referrals go to a recruiting pipeline. No one cares about you vouching for them because they go through a standardized interview process like everyone else. It’s just a means for contact this person to conduct an interview. If it works out you get paid.

Same at my current company. Up until my current job, I had only worked at startups where I felt like OP with my reputation on the line. But I asked the same question at new hire onboarding, and recruiting team said they don't hold it against anyone if candidates don't work out.
