Doesn’t make sense to me. With no health benefits or other benefits you had better be making a ton an hour to be a contract worker. How much more do you think is worth while?
When I was younger, hell yeah! I made way more right out of school on contract than I was offered in salaried positions. Most contracts do have a program you can enroll in for major benefits like healthcare.
Makes a lot of sense if you have a partner who has good benefits. Then you might be able to get health care and such through them and then also make a ton more money. Win win
I see yeah that makes sense
This.
New tax plan benefits contractors with their own business over individual earners
As a contractor I make 2-3x what I would be making in a full-time role. FT I could earn maybe $130-150k base. As a contractor I made just under $330k. I use my partner's benefits, have the freedom to take as much vacation as I want (though I don’t take much), always have an interesting new project on the horizon, and can give myself a raise with every new gig if I so choose. Unless I get stock that goes crazy, it doesn’t make sense for me to go FT.
Good for you. What line of work? Eng?
Marketing/Creative, usually copy and content
In my project, I saw contractors making 250k per year while FTs make 100k. Though contractors left after 1.5 years but the FTs are still here.
Hmm. Well I was offered $80 an hour as a contractor or 135k as an employee with nice benefits so full time was the obvious way to go
You can bounce around and earn a ton of experience. Great if you’re young and need to climb up your titles game. Getting $$$ is easy when you have 5 years experience and the word Senior or Lead on your resume, versus SDE2. Also great to break into industry when you have no degree or formal training.
Because they don't meet the bar?
I’m single with no ties to my current location. I plan on looking for a remote contract position next year so I can travel.

Are tech workers as rich as they think we are?
I actually earned more as a software contractor for my current company than now as a full time employee, something to the tune of 2x, all in liquid cash too. However, as you mentioned - virtually no benefits, and you have to constantly justify your existence and pay like no other.
