Will Google search be obsolete

Gemini says Challenge: * LLMs like me, powered by RAG, might replace Google Search due to: * Access to real-time information with RAG. * Content summarization reducing need for user interaction with ads. * This could negatively impact Google's search ad revenue. My Points: * Limited Scope: LLMs may miss real-time info and local results compared to Google Search. * Focus on Discovery/Understanding: Google Search excels at finding specific results even without summarizing. * Complementary Tools: They can work together: search for info, then use LLM for analysis. * RAG Impact: Access to real-time data for LLMs is significant, but discovery remains a strength of search engines. * LLMs & Ads: Content summaries might reduce ad exposure in some cases, but: * Improved user experience can lead to longer engagement and new ad opportunities within LLMs. * Future: Combined approach with strengths of both could benefit users and Google. In conclusion, while LLMs offer potential challenges, Google Search has strengths and opportunities to adapt and maintain dominance in the future information landscape.

LLM is slow, search is fast

Gemini is as fast as search so speed, which will only improve, shouldn’t be the concern

There's a reason brave has the summarizer, it is better

Engineers don't determine tool adoption, users do. And right now, Google search is ingrained in their dna.

Here to tell you I’m looking for any alternative because google has been sucking hard on results :/

Something to consider is businesses like google search because it gives them more traffic to their website. If instead google/llms just gave the user information and completely hid the source why would you give that service permission to constantly scrape your page or even keep it updated at all?

RAG is cool but idk if that’s the most interesting use of LLMs. They’re not really a search engine replacement but something much more flexible than that.

Gemini looks like the correct path forward for Google. But only time will tell.

It could go the other way as well. I've seen search result quality degrade in the last year or so across the board. If enough percentage of users get frustrated, we might go back to having indexes (yahoo when they started) for our searches instead of full search engines.

If Google search is dead and people move towards LLM assistants, I’d be more worried about out CAC/LTV for many consumer startups. CAC will skyrocket. In this world, what are some potentially new distribution channels?
