For the last 2-3 months, I’ve been using GPT in a bit of a unique way to help me with my job. I’ve been a SWE 1 here for about 2 years now while about half my peers have been promoted already. Why wasn’t I promoted? Idk. I decided all this effort to try and get promoted isn’t worth it, so I devised a way to reduce my effort day to day. I developed an audio receiving app that constantly receives audio. And using the whisper model on openai, the audio is transcribed to text. I then used the gpt 4 model to feed it this transcribed text. I played around with a prompts for a while until I arrived at a pretty decent prompt. Which is something like “you’re a knowledgeable senior software engineer and you’re regarded as a high performer at your company. You’re in meetings sometimes where questions will be asked. When answering the questions or responding to certain conversations, respond back with a bulleted list of talking points, where something highly complex will require you to give a brief overview in a sub bullet…” (you get the idea) Then I vectorized the prompts and responses to store in my private database so there is a long running list of answers and context. I booted up an old ipad and added this app via TestFlight. The ui is simple, sort of like a transcript for me to read the response off of. It takes me an average of 10-20 seconds to read something complex and reply back. Or 2-3 if it’s something simple. The entire thing is costing me around $50 a month (the prompts and responses can be long, I haven’t gone through and optimized much and extra tokens are used sometimes) Since using this daily for all my meetings, I’ve gotten really great feedback from my team, managers and stakeholders. The last performance review I received a stellar result and my manager was saying we’ll get ready for promo asap so we get it next cycle. I went from being on mute 80% of the time to always being relied on during calls. It feels great. At what point will this not fly anymore? Tbh I’m a pretty resourceful SWE. And as bill gates once said, “the laziest engineers come up with the best solutions” TC: 150
This has to be trolling lol
Good troll post.
Tell chatgpt to rewrite this
Nah I’m too lazy, build an app for this
Honestly, I see nothing wrong with this. As the saying goes, “necessity is the mother of invention.” Instead of using OneNote or Docs to keep track of your notes and talking points, you automated it using a solution that helps you to convey your ideas in the best way possible. As long as you have the technical chops down, you would be more than okay, OP. Congratulations! TC: 90K
Just the validation I needed. I was thinking along the same lines as well
Could you ELI5 more on how exactly is One note or Docs is being replaced here?
You actually put a lot of work on this post and the solution you created. If only you could do the same at work you'd be promoted in no time lmao
Yeah well, it’s not a very hard, engaging job where I’m allowed space to be creative. I’m just a corporate code monkey 🫡
Agree with Meta maybe you should find a job that interests you more. It seems your current work doesn’t engage you enough to aim for promotion
Good job, OP
Lmao this is actually a great idea.
Nice, chatgpt got promo here
Time to job stack.

Release it as a product and quit your job.
The operating cost is too much. Plus, if I release it as a product and on the off chance it becomes popular, most organizations will find a way to track it through additional spyware on work computers than there already probably is.
Doesn't have to be a public release.
