I recently started a position that required me to move cross country (about 2 months ago). But, just 2 weeks after starting the company announced layoffs. At which point I learned they've had layoffs nearly every year since 2012 (something I should have looked into prior to accepting the position but being a recent graduate, I didn't think to research beforehand - not something I'll overlook in the future). Knowing this, and having a better idea of the culture of the company and the department now, I'm already looking for new opportunities. When I moved for the position, I signed a 2 year prorated payback agreement for relocation costs, and what I'm wondering is: how likely is it that another company will pay the balance on my behalf if I find a new position? Has anyone had success with something like this?
your next employer will not likely pay you for relocation unless you need to relocate. However, you can compensate that amount in form of sign-on bonus if you negotiate well.
On the upside if you get laid off before your two years you don't have to pay any of that back and you can just go to a different company.
Make sure you add moving expenses on this years tax return for some sexy dollars! And negotiate your next sign on bonus well!
Sign on bonus if you're worth that much to new employer. Remember that is taxed.
If they really want you, and if you get an offer you can assume they do, some employers would definitely give you some or all of it if they think that will prevent you from taking the job. The main thing is that it never hurts to ask, but don't ask until you get an offer. Unless someone (likely the recruiter) asks you during the process if there is anything that might hold you back from taking the job.
Very unlikely. Just do your time then move on. Two years is not that long. If they lay you off, then it's on them and they can't make you pay it back. Network and line up opps for when the time comes. But you don't want a short stint anyway on your resume.
