I was laid off a couple of months ago. If I take an interim SWE job that I don't love but that just brings money in, do I have to disclose that while I keep looking? Or can I just work there in secrecy for a few months while I find something better and then permanently leave it off my resume? Is there any way future employers could find out about this? Edit: due to layoffs and other life circumstances I have had 2 jobs for 1 year each now, so part of the concern is looking like a job hopper. TC 195k -> 0 #layoffs
What's the downside of showing the job? Not sure why you want to hide it.
Edited my original post. Part of the concern is that I’ve had to leave 2 jobs after 1 year already (one because I had to move, one because of layoffs). My worry is looking like a job hopper.
I’m doing the same thing. I think you’re fine. People leave jobs shortly after getting hired for a TON of reasons; if the new company really wants you they’ll overlook the interim job even if it shows up on background check
To me this job could only be beat by a real FAANG or equivalent/better job. My worry is actually somewhat around the fact that there’s never really anyone wants THAT badly at big companies like that. Any because of that, it might actually matter that it shows up on a background check.
I’m sorry i don’t understand? This is a non issue, people do this all the time. It’s normal. Just say it didn’t work out if you’re asked about it or treat it like it was contract work. Either way no one really cares. 1 year stints is not job hopping it’s the norm. And you’re an engineer I actually expect engineers to leave within 6 months to a year especially if they’re talented

I'm assuming you're not on visa. The interim job might show up on a future background check. In general I don't think you have to discourse it to recruiters or in interview.
I am not on visa. Is it bad if it shows up on a background check?
It's only bad if it shows up when they aren't expecting it to. You could pass off the interim job as a contract/consulting gig (temporary/transient by nature), together with the presumably involuntary layoff I doubt anyone would hold it against you.
