Windows11 -> Ubuntu on work laptop. Worth it

I have been using computers since i was 6 years old. It was windows 3.1. Have been a die hard fan of windows until win11. I also defended windows during the vista / windows 8 times. But not now. Few things : -- Edge + bing is being pushed down my throat. Even start menu uses bing search now. -- Store. No one uses windows store. Stop copying apple store and play store. -- ads in outlook. I got a banner that said " upgrade to office 365 home for personal use at 50 percent off " seriously? No one uses office 365 for personal use Microsoft, we all just use Google docs. -- my office provided laptop has 32 GB of RAM. On idle it takes about 14 GB of RAM. Agreed there are some programs like VPN and firewall , but still that's way too high. -- constant update notification. No thank you. Last weekend, i sat down and wiped down my entire drive on office laptop and installed Ubuntu. Works like a charm. Less hassle. And i seriously feel that i am a bit more productive without all the distractions. On the same day , i went and got myself a MacBook air M1, and honestly it's way better than win11. I also have a Chromebook that i use while i travel ( for movies ) , and i am impressed by that as well. Overall i feel win11 is the worst operating system in the market right now. Microsoft, you are making your most popular products, worse after each release. Don't cry when MacOS and Chromebooks take away your market dominance. Rant over. TC :210k YOE : 4 in tech. Geez. I use MacOS, Ubuntu and Windows on a daily basis and this is the shitiest take I’ve heard in a while. The RAM usage on your work laptop is largely down to corporate spyware and bloatware — there is no need to blame the OS for that. Adding a store like Apple doesn’t need to be a bad thing. It makes Windows far more accessible and it’s completely optional.

Agree on your part. But i did a fresh install of win11 on my personal Thinkpad machine as well. RAM usage 45 percent on idle.

What kind of a machine is it? Does your personal machine also have 32 GB? Also, all machines index as much as needed. In fact, MacOS doesn’t release any data even on closing applications to improve reopening speed. Memory management these days isn’t that transparent. I’m sure if you needed to open an application that needed more Ram, these background tasks would close or move to swap memory for a better experience.

Stopped using Windows more than 15 years ago, except for gaming computer. MacOS is for me the sweet spot between a unix like machine and a great user experience in terms of not having to spend countless hours trying to figure out why a piece of hardware you just plugged in is not working, or not having to deal with wonky open source versions of paid comercial software.

Windows is only good for gaming. Terrible at everything else.
