Background: I’m a Sr. PM and people leader with high ratings and probably will see a promotion to Director at year-end or next mid-year. I secured funding for and am leading a new product initiative to take to market in the next 6-12 months (I’m *moderately* excited about the scope.) Objective: I’d like to end up at a FAANG or other notable tech co. with a fun or fulfilling use case and brand (e.g. Spotify, Uber, AirBnB, Doordash, etc…I welcome ideas). My drivers are TC, upward mobility, exciting work, and preferably avoiding a hellish work environment (toxic culture, insane hours); strong preference for remote working flexibility, too. Dilemma: With the economic slowdown, hiring freezes, and increasing cost of capital, I’m grappling with whether I should hang tight, enjoy the opportunities where I am, and leave after I’ve leveled up with another promo at C1, or try to make the move now. Would love input from all you Blinders! Thanks! TC: $230k TC after promotion: ~$280k-$300k YOE: 10 Edit: removed Coinbase from the list of possible companies #tech #product #faang #capitalone
Coinbase tomorrow will be a disaster. Crypto Armageddon. And please stay where you are. Not a good time to move. If the new company decides to cut, a new expensive employee will be the first one to be chopped off.
^ this!
This aged like fine wine.
If you're so close to a promotion, I'd stick around. You can get a much better role with that role as your current title
Thanks everyone for the polling engagement and the comments! I’m really interested in additional clarity behind the votes for the “Leave now” path if you’re able to shed more light there. 🙏
I voted "leave now". I was a SD at C1, and can say from experience that the jump to D is one of the hardest and most political. I moved to Google after looking around internally and just not seeing anything interesting. Got a 50% raise and dodged people management (well, for a while anyways...). Don't let them keep you on the hook, hoping the next cycle is a promo.
What was the level mapping for you going from SD at C1 to Google? Thanks!
Also what is your TC at Google?
Love the conversation here. M level PM at COF myself thinking through the same dilemma. If you see this, could you please give and update on your decision and current thoughts?

Unless losing a job will really put you out on the street (which at your TC I hope it wouldn't), I'd say take the risk on a role that you think will enhance your career and be more fulfilling. Just try to avoid companies that will be first to fall in a recession (i.e. coinbase). FAANG isn't going anywhere.
